Does anyone know if there is an 'adhoc' breakdown assistance the continent? ie. who does one call if he has not purchased breakdown cover and needs to be rescued? ... and how much?

ADAC is popular out here in Germany. They have some good service. They have different packages depending on what you want. If I remember right it's maybe 20 euro a month. their website is ADAC.de. Hope this helps you out.
