Duel Headlight Mod...Help?

I would like to do the headlight mod but ever since i fried a cell phone by forcing the "what i thought was right " charger into it, i just dont touch anything electrical.........a power comander is easy but these lights scare me.

don't worry about it. the mod is easy to do if you do it the way i did no need to remove the tank or battery box just the inside of your 1/4 fairing (6 screws). besides the worst thing you can do is fry a fuse or a light bulb. just remember to keep the bike off until your complete done.

I have to say that I am interested in hearing more about this mod but then again I keep my high beams on day and night just so people will see me. It seems like the whole world is oblivious to motorcyclists. When people flash me I just think, " Oh good! You can see me!"

when using the wiring harness from biker dude allow your right low beam light to turn off when you turn on your high beam. i have read a lot of the headlight mods on here and was wondering what turns the low beam off. a switch? or a relay that is already inside the bike?

I have not seen his harness, but based on what I am reading about it, it is just making the feature that Yamaha built, but neglected to wire in, available to us. I have done the mod, w/o his harness and the low beam turns off on the right side when the high beam turns on. It does this because the right side low beam is powered by the hi/low switch and it removes power to the low beam circuit when it is switched to high beam.

In certain conditions do you not think that dazzling the on coming traffic could be dangerous? Just because you have your lights on still will not guarantee that you will be seen. The dual headlight mod is very worth while regardless of whose method you use.

Notice: The next time a cager or a m/c rider high beams me I am GOING TO TAKE HOSTAGES!. I am sick of this. "Yeah, I know, I DON'T have a headlight out." It's the same with cagers with 4 lheadlights: sometimes they don't use the high beam. Just because two of the headlights are not illuminated that doesn't mean that there's a burned out headlight!

I already purchased BD's wire loom. It's pricey but, hey, I was either going to take hostages or f'ing change the stock lighting. I figure since BD went though the trouble to outline his handy work that he DESERVES a tip. But whatever, I recommend that everyone send an "appreciation notice" to Yamaha USA for having designed it this way. Either that, or just keep your high beam on and f road courtesy.

Can you post up how you did it mate?

I didn't even go to the harness at the frame. I went up to the wire loom just outside of the high/low beam switch at the left handlebar. If you carefully cut the plastic sheath to reveal the wires inside, you do an inline splice on the brighter green wire with the wire you're attaching to the bulb. (Excuse my soldering job... I couldn't find the good iron and had to use the crap hobby one)

Wrap it with tape, pull the cut sheath back over it, then tape it all up neatly. I ran the wire down this sheath to the left hand side of the fairing where the rest of the connections are and put a barrel connector in, then kept going by following the stock wires over to the headlight.

Notice: I have installed BD47's dual headlight mod loom. Now, if anybody points to a headlight and it's not burned out, I WILL TAKE HOSTAGES. I have done what was expected of me. By the way, when I plucked down the near 7G's (well, actually it was a check) nobody at the dealership told me about this requirement---that one must modify the Yamaha headlight system OR ELSE. Since I'm a good sport, I not going to file a lawsuit over this. I can take a joke. You gotta wonder: how do the Yamaha dealer sales reps keep a straight face when they sell you one of these knowing what you're in for? This one headlight business is tantamount to Yamaha selling a 4 cylinder motorcycle where only three actually work.

I will agree w/you on this!! I got a used '04 didn't even know about the 1-light low beam deal, and there's 2 of 'em but only 1 works! I was appalled at Yamaha doing this. I still find it hard to believe, but have gone ahead & done Shaggy's modification.

It was the 1st mod I did. It was so simple that it was just dumb not to do it so much that I don't even mention it.

The way I did it was the way boneman and a few others had suggested doing it, the correct way. It was fast and extremely easy and splicing into the wire wasn't that scary at all. Both lights work correctly and the high beam works like a charm. The wire is hidden with the existing wires and black electrical tape hides the rest at the handlebars. I actually didn't go all the way up the bars but closer down to the tank. The whole deal only took me about thirty minutes. But instead of soldering the wire together, i used quick eeze connectors from radioshack #640-3052. put the connector over the existing wire and inserted the extra wire and pressed it together and wala it was done. Taped over it and it works and looks like a charm. Go to youtube and search for fz6 headlight mod and check it out.

I would not ever use a connector like radioshack #640-3052 in any situation where water is involved you will regret it sooner or later corrosion takes place quite quickly .

I used them on my trailer when I rewired the whole thing a year ago and they are even exposed to the elements and no corrosion or anything of the sort has taken place at all so... The wiring on the bike is thoroghly taped up so no chances of being exposed to water. Thanks for your opinion but I think I did just fine

Well after reading all I have seen written I zoomed off to my local DIY and bought come black wire and one of those connectors (though I bought the wrong one but I made it fit anyway.....)

Found the green wire coming out from the left hand handlebar - opened it up and joined it to the black wire - joined that to the top thingy for the right hand bulb and.............. about 8 minutes later - hey presto! A double dipped beam now when the engine runs! How easy was that!!??

I am now considering getting my dril out and drilling some holes in the exhaust to make it sound a little bit less like my washing machine - but perhaps I can find another simpler mod before I attempt that one eh?

Hi,
Am now the proud owner of an '08 FZ6 S2 ABS, and it didn't take long to realise that the first mod required was the dual headlight. (I quickly got fed up with people pointing at me, or flashing lights at me to tell me I have a bulb out)

I didn't relish the idea of cutting into the existing wiring, or fashioning my own connectors or loom, so I approached a guy called Jim Davis who runs a specialist company for motorcycle wiring solutions. Check out:

He didn't have a loom specifically for the FZ6, but was quite prepared to make one up for me.

It's an excellent piece of kit - fully protected with relays and an in-line fuse, and is simply 'plug-and-play'.

He is now going to add the loom to his stock items.

I can thoroughly recommend him, (extremely helpful) and his products, (quality kit, well put together).
