Cut down windscreen?

I was thinking of getting a taller windshield, but I have been reading that the tall windscreen does not really cut down the noise. With my stock screen, the wind hits me right square in the face and creates lots of noise, does the shorter, cut down screen reduce noise? I know the wind would be heavier, but if it really is quieter, thats ok. And should I try to buy a shorter screen or would I be better off to mod it myself? I guess I could do it, I would be nervous tho!!:squid:

I have the Puig Racing Screen, it is
2 inches taller than stock. It is actually
quiter than my stock one and the wind
flows over my helmet. I am 5'11" .

A few people have done the steveindenmark mod cutting down the screen, I'll see if I can find a link for it.

Here it is, it's for the 04-06 but you could do something similar to 07+ I'm sure.

I admit I also have the Double bubble on mine....because it looks good.

However when I go to Italy in the summer I will probably put the lowered screen on again. It certainly cuts the buffeting out totally but not so much the wind noise, but a taller screen does not do that either.

To cut out noise you need earplugs, a good full face helmet, the Schubert S1 is said to be the best. Possibly a helmet skirt if you can find one that stays on and does not split within a week or 2.

Here's what I posted about my cut down windscreen experience in a earlier thread. By the way, the idea and method came from steveindenmark (thanks Steve!)

I cut my windscreen down about 6 months ago. It made a noticeable difference in noise reduction. Now the main amount of the wind hits me n the chest. However, about 2 months ago I bought a new helmet. Now the wind noise is back again and I feel my neck muscles getting tired on longer rides.

I think there is no perfect answer, the riders height, seating position/preference, helmet style & shape all come into play. I plan on buying a Puig double bubble soon and I guess I'll see how that works...

I fought with my personal noise demons last fall and found that the only way I could get decent wind protection AND noise reduction was to use the big CalSci windshield (+11.5) with an extra Laminar Lip mounted on top. I spent a week riding w/ no windscrene at all and found the noise/buffet to be great, but I've only been riding for a year and felt uncomfortable being pushed around by the wind. While my combo doesn't look very sexy at all, it offers the same level of (lower) noise with the wind protection that I desired.

If you promise not to laugh, I might post a picture or two ...

Yeah, post some pics!! I wont laugh, I just want to know my options! I am leaning towards Steve's solution though. I am going to trim my screen this weekend I am thinking! His end result looked good and it sounds like it really works!

To finish the screen properly you need some of that clear plastic screen edging. Your bike dealer should be able to get you some, it is dirt cheap.

Sorry for the messy garage ... that's the only picture I have so far. If you want to preview the effect of the cut-down screen, simply remove it altogether first.

I have an 07 with a CalSci 9.5" on it.... I am 5'10 and the noise at my helmet was extreme (even though the buffeting problem was completely solved)

I ended up cutting mine down to basically a +5" (over stock) and I consider it a compromise between body buffeting with the stock screen, and noise with the taller screen.

I can vouche for the S1; I don't need earplugs, and have NO noise issues what so ever. Great helmet, that I've been using with great joy the last year and a ½.
