coming round a bend at 60kph, hit a patch of gravel i didnt see as it was on the lane marker and i was eying a larger patch of gravel just away from the patch i hit. was in mid turn as i was more or less gonna carry the turn through as there wasnt enough room to straighten the bike up after lane change so soon as i hit the gravel the bike just straightaway fell on its right side landed on my leg but then skidded away i cracked my chin on the pavement and my left hand hit palm facing down as well. 2 scratches, super sore neck, sore right leg, immensely more respect for gravel. bikes got broken front fairing (piece missing) rear brake lever bent a bit, wheel sqeaks a little when rolling it slowly, scratches to body on right side as well from sliding. all my protective gear came in EXTREMELY handy as I suffered essentially ZERO injuries. cracked by back on the ground as well at one point but my intense back protector did its job well.

gonna trade this bike in for a drz400 now. I was getting fairly comfortable on this bike now that I had put on about 3,000km. But ANY mistakes you make are magnified on a bike as quick as this is (2006 FZ6). I had a few close calls over my first 3,000km from noobie mistakes being magnified by power of bike, nothing too close, but close enough to raise an eyebrow. After laying in a hospital hallroom staring at a ceiling with neck-brace on and laying on a backboard it is extremely humbling and huge dose of reality. laying there thinking wow if it had been worse i would be laying here with spinal chord injury or something rly bad. All the videos of guys taking spills from youtube, aftermath stories, just big dose of reality.

for the most part the FZ6 I had under decent control. But it is just way too tempting on that bike to go a little quicker than maybe you should be going (which is what was the cause of my other close calls over the first 3k clicks). Any and all uncertainty is magnified with a magnifying glass that just blows up what youve done wrong or were unsteady with on this bike. And as confident as I have become on the FZ6, when I ride my cousins DRZ400 I feel so much more content as I am 100% riding the bike instead of the 90% me riding bike 10% bike-riding-me that happens with newb on FZ6.

wowzers-1.jpg

red blob is me on approach, red line is desired line for lane change then turn

yellow lane markers are lane divider lines (actually white on the black roads) and dont have em mid-intersection but i drew em in anyway in the intersection as well

gravel on the lane marker, and in intersection.

blue X is point of impact with ground

yellow squiggly is the bouncing and skidding

green squiggly is me shuffling over to side of road

red body is me laying on my back feeling like I got hit by 20 baseball bats at the same time.

haha, WOWZERS INDEED!!!!

More pics so we can judge.....................

Oh, glad your ok..............

Now back to the chick!

OH NO!

I feel absolutely terrible about this. Just horrible. I'm so sorry. Obviously, the FZ6 is NOT an engine to be taken lightly. I've seen different sites with different opinions, but your story destroys them all.

Good job that you told us about this story. Never stop telling it. You had the proper gear and explained what you learned after the fall. I commend you for surviving this. Well done.

Glad you are okay, gravel is not good. But I couldn't help notice, according to your diagram, why were you riding on the white or yellow dividing line that separates the lane? Seems to me you were not riding within your lane nor your correct line.

Glad you're OK. Sorry about your bike! Big kudos to you for admitting the bike is beyond your ability and changing this now before you're seriously hurt! I applaud your honesty. You will go far in life!

I love the FZ6 and have always wanted the FZ1 but I know I cannot push the 6 to its limits thus the FZ1 is far beyond my abilities as a rider... so much so that when I sold my '05, I went looking for a new bike... I ended up right back on the FZ6. :D Caouldn't be happier!

:iconbeer: for you!

I'll add my name to the list of well wishers and "glad you're OK"s. Also thanks for posting a good description of the accident and what you might have done wrong. I find myself becoming an avid reader of internet accident reports, hoping to learn from other riders' mistakes. Where to slow down, where to allow a little more space, etc. Sothanks, I appreciate the post. Heal fast and enjoy the drz.

good thing you aren't too bad coming out of it... to bad you're not local, Id trade you my DRZ400s for your wrecked bike. Seems like it's been a bad month for FZ owners uh?

Sorry to hear about the crash, glad you're relatively ok. If a different bike would make you more comfortable, maybe feel a little safer, then go for it, but be careful and don't be overconfident. I'm sure you will always be member of this family.

ill get an fz6 in a couple years, after i spend a few years on the dual sport. I think ill always have a special place in my heart for it. I was absolutely in love with the machine. I mean I actually got sad when I had to go inside even if I didnt ride it and was just walking by it to go inside. my baby took a nice knock and I left her with a scar, but then again i took the brunt of it as I cushioned her fall with my right leg haha.

all the after-pictures coming up shortly....

Glad you are ok. Good luck with the new bike remember the throttle can also be used to slow you down.

Nelly

btw this all happened at night. thing is i had others advocating night riding for the lack of traffic.

I hope you get back up and riding soon. Some of the worst accidents i have seen is from people getting back on bikes after years of not riding and getting in way over their heads. Get over the fear and get out there!

Glad to hear you are alright and thanks for the detailed post.
