formula154

I have been reading about changing out gears, going from 16 to 15 in the front. It looks like all you need are basic wrenchs to do the job. A few questions, after taking the nut off which holds the gear on, how hard is it to get the gear off? Do you need a gear puller or some kind of tool to pull it off with? The other question is how do you know what 15 tooth gear will fit the front of the FZ6. Third does just changing out the front give a noticeable change in low speed acceleration? How much trouble and expense is it to fix the speedometer to read correctly after the change? Thanks.

If you are changing the front sprocket then theres a member "Wavex" hes done it and loves that mod. I think from what i understood it gives you more torque throught all the rpms quicker.

i recently have changed the front sprocket to 15 ,,,,there is a noticeable difference of acceleration,,,screwed up the speedo but i dont know how much yet,,i have to ride the bike with the gps on to see what exact difference it made,,,,

changing process is very easy,it took about 30mins all together,,,you dont need a special tool,,,i think the nut is 30mm and it is hard to unscrew it,,you have to loosen it before loosening the rear tire,,put the bike in neutral and stick something to the rear tire to stop spinning,,or have someone sit on the bike

after loosening the sprocket nut,,it is very easy to pull it out...place the new one in place and put the bike together...its very worth it,,,,you will loose the top speed ,it doesnt matter that much but you will also be travelling at higher rpms than before at highway speeds...

What effect did it have on your MPG?

i had a little surgery right after i changed it,,i only rode it around 150 kms with the new sprocket,,,i wont be able to ride it probably another 2 weeks so i dont knowyet but i wish to find out soon :) damn i cant bend my knee right now..
:(

The speed readings are modified in 6.25 %.

[UPDATE]

The speed readings are modified in 6.65 %

Reading With 16T sprocket = 100 Km/h

Reading with 15T sprocket = 106 Km/h

The output torque is the same. What you are gaining is a mechanical advantage through gearing. The first step is -1 on the front which takes you from a final drive ratio of 2.87:1 up, which is actually giving you a lower gearing to 3.06:1..
Take this a bit further and move to the R6 gearing which is 15/48 or -1/+2 and things will get real interesting.

Heads up, find a friend with an impact, torque wrench and an air compressor and you are done quick.

I was discussing this same idea with another guy who messes with his bikes, and he claims that changing the front sprocket to spin more can be bad on the motor and bearings.

He likes to add 3 teeth to the rear, and states it does the exact same thing without messing around so near the main bearings.
Something about vibration.

Ah well, I'm going to keep mines "as is", and when I feel it's time to move to a faster bike, I'll get an FZ1.

From all accounts I've heard, the FZ1 is a ROCKET; it will make short work of a lot of other bikes on the road.

I like the claims part. That's always the most interesting part because it's unsupported. Fact is there are a huge number of riders doing it and have been doing it for a very long time. While living in California I could go to the MX track on a Saturday running -1 only to hit the desert on Sunday at +1. My Harley has been at -1 long before it ever had the first 1,000 miles on it. I ran -1 on the FZ6 for quite a while and when it comes time to change the chain and sprockets out next season I'll be -1 front and +2 rear. In all, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for a bearing failure due to running -1.

OK I have been looking at some front and rear sprockets. -1 in front gives about the same ratio change as +2 in the back. my latest question is this, I have seen gears listed as for 520 conversion. I have seen 530 and 520 conversion. What exactaly are they talking about concerning 530 and 520 conversion? another question, I have an air compressor. Will an impact wrench serve as a torque wrench for getting the right pressure on the nuts.
I feel like some of these questions are dumb but if I don't ask I will stay ignorent forever. I have never used an impact wrench. Id the torque on the wrench adjustable or can you just adjust the air pressure going in the wrench? Thanks in advance.

Hey Formula154 An impact wrench is adjustable but not to the precision of a torque wrench. As for the 520 vs 530, I believe it's the diameter of the roller of the chain link that is the difference. 530 being 5/8" & 520 being 9/16".

HavBlue if I change to 15/48 sprockets would the chain be the same length chain as the R6? Also would it be possible to change the speedo gear (If there is one, I check my service manual) in the trans and replace it with an R6 gear which might correct the speedo? Thanks for any input anyone might have on this subject. Ken :Sport:

The difference is the pitch of the chain or to make things really simple, the distance between rollers center to center. It in no way reduces the strength of that chain.

As to the impact and accuracy, they do make torque rods for the impacts that makes them very accurate however, you need not spend the money, simply tighten the nut down on the low side and then use the torque wrench on the final.

OK then does the FZ6 have a 530 chain? If it does then I would need a sprocket for a 530 chain not for a 520, unless I wanted to change the chain also, Is that right?

Yes, the pitch on the FZ6 is 530 so everything you get must be for a 530. The R6 uses a 525 which is why you can't simply buy an R6 set of sprockets and throw them on the FZ6.

I ordered the front sprocket 15 tooth 530. Ill let you know how it turns out. I noticed conversion kits for sell for 520. They are selling them to people with 530's and for the r6 with a 525 chain. what is the point in changing to a 520 from a 530 or a 525?

I was running a 15/48 for about a year or so. The RPM's at highway speed was too high for me, so I went with a 47 in the back this time. Both of these are a 520 chain.

Drop the front to 15 and go with the 520 conversion, you will love it I promise. My fuel economy is still well intonear the 40's, usually about 38mpg, and I ride all the time.

The boost in perceived horsepower increase through harder acceleration was and is well worth the maybe 1 or 2mpg loss. My speedo error is this: indicating 82, going 70mph so its about a 15% margin of error on my 15/27 setup.

Do the 520 conversion and get the 15/47 gears with it, you will love it. You can find the kit I have on Ebay from SumOfAllParts.
