Mega pissed off now, just replaced engine because it let go and the replacement engine with only 7k miles on it is about to do the same, not a cheap part either. Mechanic tells me it's a common fault and one guy has had to replace his five times.

It sounds like your going to the wrong mechanic, motor should last way longer than that unless that is 7k track miles and you rag the snot out of it.
 
It's rare that a tensioner will completely fail and let the chain slip. Usually with ours a little plastic retainer inside will fail and allow the tensioner spring to move back in resulting in a lumpy idle, but still keeping tension so the bike runs.
