Burnt Rubber

Question

I commute to work each day and at about 600 miles on the bike, I began to notice a burnt rubber smell coming from the engine area. There is no visible smoke and I have inspected all of the rubber hoses for contact.

And no, I do not do burnouts with the rear tire, strictly a commuter. Any ideas?

It's probably your tire burning which is normal. Hot rubber smells.

only 600 miles? could still be all the coatings burning off the parts? from manufacture.

I smell hot rubber on my bike alot of the time.

I smell it too but thought it must be the car in front of me. It would seem on the highway the smell would be behind you and you wouldnt be able to smell it coming from your bike.

I thought that too. Then I got to thinking
Our tires last 3000-12000 miles. On a car the same tread depth lasts 25,000-70,000 miles Our tires must get used up, and hot pretty quick.

Drove home in the rain yesterday and there was no burnt smell. This morning when I drove in the smell appears to be more like hot fluid or oil burning. I am going to do a thorough inspection after work before I wash it and check for leaks.

It could also be road gunk, goo or oil splashed up onto your engine or header pipes bunring away.
