Brake line install

So I'm about to take the plunge and install my hel lines and speed bleeders!! pretty excited considering i get to use my works warehouse for a location.. makes for a nice inside job as well as the slop sink for cleaning.. But wanted to check my torque numbers.

Bleed nipple - 4.3 ft-lb
Banjo bolt - 22 ft-lb

I have a 120 to 900 in-lb wrench and one for the bleed nipple (dunno range, it's works)

Wondering if I can just use 240 or do I really need to go to 264. Obviously 240 is a lot easier to get to on the wrench. Any tips from the pros???

oh and here is a pic with just about everything i think i need.. i'll post some pictures of the install if i have time!!

FWIW - torque wrench is great but I never used one for brake lines install. I installed brake lines many times for myself and for my friends - never had to use it.

saw this a while ago... boneman really needs to fix the links... but yea, i even have his site saved as a bookmark...

as for not using a torque wrench, to each their own. i do not want to chance stripping a thread, so ill stick to the torque wrench. :thumbup:

i just used a little 8mm 12 point spanner and did it by hand

what brand of lines did u go w/.....also what size was ur speed bleeders? i got the 8mm by 1.25 n didnt fit.. im guessing you got the 7mm by 1.0??

Can't argue - to each their own :thumbup:

Still good to know and have a good sense on how to do it by hand - can come very handy on long trips or even if you stranded in the city.

What went wrong? Calipers are easy to rebuild and even if thread is destroyed - you can still save it.

what went wrong??? speed bleeders do not come with great instructions.. i kept turning until it was tight.. figured it would need to seat down by the hex, and snap!!! sheered it right of flush with the caliper.. was soooo angry, but it was basically my own fault as i should have stopped tightening it, but was following the directions. picture is junk, but it sheered at where the ball is inside. i could drill it out and retap, but im just going to buy a new/used caliper and rebuild.... someone else can drill this out as i do not know where i would start, nore have the tools to do so.. not a big deal at all... :thumbup: anyone have an extra rear caliper laying around that they want to get ride of???

and yes i continued the install and just didnt torque the caliper banjo bolt!!

the fronts i believe were 7mm by 1.0 but i decided not to even bother after what happened with the back... honestly, the fronts were so easy to bleed by myself, i dont think i will ever bother with speed bleeders again.. i dont get why i read that it was sooo hard to bleed by hand with one person.. i had no trouble at all... :thumbup:

OMG man me and you had the SAME problem...i stripped the threads in my left front caliper and had to buy a used caliper off a guy on the forum parting out his bike.. bought it for $55 u should do the same..his name is steve allen

yea i saw his posts.. i sent out a bunch of pm's and already checked eBay.. just sucks because i do not want to ride with just the front brakes (I'm sure everything would be fine).. but the fronts are awesome.. still need to do work with zip-ties and get the other reflector back on, but the short 2 mile ride home from work where i did them, awesome.. just awesome.. and i still have the stock pads with almost 20k on them and it was a big improvement... cant wait to buy new pads soon!!

this is obviously before it happened.. what you may notice is how the jar is backwards and how i lost about half hour trying to fix the mittyvac until it worked again.. thank god right!!

oh and yea, if you wax the hell out of your bike, it will do this!!

ill post up some review later on after some miles and after i fix the rear... otherwise the only thing left is to drain the front a bit as i think i overfilled the master...

Dont sweat it - take it out and put old bleeder in.
Since you have vacuum pump - you don't even need speedbleeders.
And rear brake is easy to bleed even without the pump.

Once out - take caliper apart, clean it real good with brake fluid, put old bleeder in and you are back in business.

And the link to extracting tool I posted is just an example. I got mine, containing three pieces for like 10 bucks at local hw store.
I did not have a torque wrench at the time, was doing oil change on my car and was a bit enthusiastic when tightening drain bolt

I already bought a caliper.. But good idea.. Thanks. I might just fix the one I have now and sell it back on eBay.

I'm kinda wondering how to put the left side reflector back on (clutch side). the brake line went into a distribution block and that was part of the reflector mount... wondering if i should dremmel the block so i can reinstall the reflector.. i may post up some pics so people understand what I'm talking about.

for the left reflector i didnt put it on. let me kno how if your going to:thumbup:
