Battery life

I'm riding a fz6 06 s1 model. When i took over the bike and before install a 1way alarm on it. The battery was 13.0v. After i install the alarm now battery always show 12.5~12.6v. So isit average lvl or do i need to bring my battery for a recharge.?

If you disconnect the alarm power, does the voltage return to the higher level? If the alarm is powered all the time, it could deplete the charge on the battery.

Your measureing voltage in static form, this reading should be 12.7 > 13.4 provideing your battery is in good condition , with your bike running at 1500 rpm you should be reading this between any power point and ground... your readings you state are a little low for static ( not running ) . A 3 year old battery could be your problem, and as mentioned these batteries even new are borderline....try a long slow charge then have a load test done on it...Daryl

I'm guessing that the weak ass Yamaha charging system has something to do with this.

Screw the charger, go ride it for a couple tanks of gas in a day.
If low after testing go get a new battery.
Pick up a battery tender while you are out riding. You will need it for the old or new battery.

i havent try disconnecting my alarm yet. Nope! I dont on my alarm all the time. I only on it when at night. Ard 9hrs~10hrs till the next morning.

Hmm. My battery shldnt be 3yr old. The previous owner said that he changed the battery few months ago only. So shld be a less than 6months battery. My idling is ard 910~1020rpm. The battery hit ard 13.0~13.8v when i just start my bike. After the idling is stable, the voltage drop to ard 12.6. Ya. I might bring to my bikeshop to hav a charge on the battery.

oh man! i really hope i dont need to change a new battery! Coz a fz6 battery cost more than a fz1 battery in singapore!!!

You haven't stated any problems ,other then a low but acceptable reading....do you have starting issues ? If not ....ride it ! Starting draws amperage and lowers the batteries full load capacity and hence the voltage drops...your 13 - 13.8 is the result of the regulator seeing a voltage drop and allowing a full charge from the alternator...within a few mins. this reading should drop....so your 12.6 indicates that the battery has already accepted a higher charge rate and is being maintained with the min set by the regulator.....and yes a battery tender is a good investment if your planning on leaving it dormant for long periods... plate sulfation starts and drops load capacity ..thats non reversable damage .. / ps. make sure that your VOM ( meter ) is speaking true numbers....replace that little batt. in the case once in a while...hope this helps a little... Maybe turn the idle up a little, should be nearer 1250. (once warmed up - more like 1600 while warming up)
