anyone had a chain snap/break on them?

I had a chain snap on me last year. i was fortunate as i was accelerating from 1st to 2nd it snapped and wrapped itself around my turn signal. I didn't even know it at first, just thought I hit a false neutral. CHECK YOUR CHAIN SLACK...lesson learned.

Had about 20 mi on it and was running it too loose :spank: After installing the 15T and a new chain I forgot to remove some links before riviting the master on.
ordered a new master and thought it'd be ok to run a loose chain for a few days. Not so much.

You mentioned that you have a new shock. If the rear wheel was removed to install that shock, then it's possible that when it was put back on, the chain tension was set too tight. Then every time you hit a bump and compressed the suspension, the chain was pulled even tighter and it eventually snapped.

In the spirit of "look where you last worked" that's my best guess as to the cause of the failure.

It's good that nobody got hurt.

By the way, the damage to your engine case is a common thing that happens when a chain breaks. Dirtbikes have chain guards for that purpose, like this.



The idea behind it is that when the chain breaks, it cannot wad itself up around the front sprocket. Instead it will stay on the sprocket as the engine pulls the broken length of chain through and then spits it out onto the road.

I never understood why they don't make these for sportbikes. I may see if I can design one for the FZ6.

I personally have not had a chain break. My uncle busted up his beautiful 1971 CB750 (I think I have the call letters correct) by running a chain that was well past its prime. He'd even removed several links it was so old. Sad thing is he had a new set of sprockets and chain at his house ready to go. Now the motor is riding around in his van waiting for the cases to be welded up.

I'm glad you didn't take any of the damage unleashed by your chain, man. I hope you figure out the cause and ways to prevent it.
