How many miles did you guys cover before you had to tighten the chain?

Ive covered 5000miles now and its still within the allowable slack limit, would have thought it would have needed adjusting by now.

edit...ah hang on i managed 4200 miles and had a new rear tyre fitted so it was probably tightened then...doh

I've been very impressed with mine actually. On my last bike, when I had a new chain and sprockets fitted, it needed tightening within a few weeks. I've had the FZ6 for months now and done 700+ miles and it's still fine. Course it may have been adjusted during the first service (but that was 400miles ago).

You may have the answer (adjusted when new tire fitted). When I brought mine in for the first 4,000 mile service, my chain was still well within spec. They adjusted it anyway, and adjusted it too tight (I could feel it binding when riding slow).

Mine was fine until somewhere just afer 1k miles, then it went crazy slack all at once. I was riding home and it started getting really buzzy and felt like it was lagging a bit on acceleration. I pulled over and gave her a once over, and my chain had about 2" of play in it!
I was really close to home, so I just rode her real easy untilo I got there and tightened it up. Hasn't come loose at all since and I've put a couple hundred miles on. I check it every time I mount up now though.
Anyone else have a chain come loose like that?

I bought mine used, and have put almost 3,000 miles on it without even touching it. In fact I've only cleaned/lubed the chain once :\

It's my first bike and it's my tool to learn.

If it is still in spec then don't mess with it. Many here have different riding styles that may bring the chain [adjustment] out of spec. Mine for instance was left alone and remained in spec until I replaced the tires 8500+ miles.

I'm thinking the older the chain the more frequent I'll have to adjust, so that would mean I may need an adjustment before the next tire change or not.

You could have a lot of variables that have one adjusting chain slack more frequent than another. Quality of chain, chain/sprocket care, road and rider input.

I think the important part is to routinely check it.

I have 2,300 miles on my chain and it's still within factory tension limits. I've cleaned the chain twice and lube it with Bel-Ray chain lube every 500 miles. I haven't needed to touch the tensioner yet.
