A scientific experiment may destroy the earth later this year

I'm aware of this, but I was talking about the well documented evidence presented in leading scientific works such as Star Trek, Star Trek Voyeger, Star Gate SG1, Star Gate Atlantas, Contact etc. They go through worm holes all the time and are thus able to travel many light years in a matter of seconds.


OK, lets straighten this out a bit. In 1935, physicists Albert Einstein and Nathan Rosen figured out that general relativity allowed for the existence of “bridges,” which were originally called Einstein-Rosen bridges. These are now known as wormholes. These space-time corridors are thought to act as shortcuts connecting distant regions of space-time. By journeying through a wormhole, you could travel between the two regions at a velocity far greater than C would be able to complete the journey had it moved through the normal space-time continuum. As with any mode of faster than light transportation, wormholes offer the possibility of time travel. Once again this falls back on our lack of present understanding and the questions therein. Things we may want to consider here are singularities and exotic matter. The true understanding of either is however way off. A very good book to read here is "Traveling through Time" by Michio Kaku, one of my favorite physicists.
 
I often wonder if we as humans are trying to apply logical explanations "rules" for our universe, when it may not all be logical. So what we end up with are approximations and may always be searching.

Excellent thought and this is it in a nutshell Grommit. In terms relative to the various sciences, a theory must be based on observation, experimentation, reasoning and the results therein. Therefore, any scientific theory must be be derived from a careful examination of the facts as they have been presented. In order for the scientific theory to be proven a careful distinction must be made between facts ,which are the issues that can be measured and/or observed and theories, which is a method for the explanations and correlation of those facts.

In a word, this is our current best guess based on facts as we know them. Please keep in mind that absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. You will also note any scientific theory must be constantly reviewed and updated by the specific disciplines peer group. A very good example of this would be the adjustments to the theory of evolution originally pondered by Darwin and the laws of motion originally pondered by Newton. The theory of relativity will also find the need to be adjusted as time and our understanding of the facts presses on. So, when someone says "it's just a theory" I would have to suggest they first consider the strength of their own argument before suggesting the current scientific theory is wrong.
