1986 FZ 600 trouble! (no power!)

I recently bought this bike and later found out that insurance was way too much for me to afford so i am selling it, but i took the gas tank off to clean it and cleaned the carbs. After i did that i put a new battery in it now im not getting any power when i turned the key on, now i haven't done any tests or anything because i don't know where to start, I'm fairly new to street bikes so i was wondering if anybody could give me a hand with this one. Where do i start checking or could i have un plugged something when i took the gas tank off! Any help is greatly appreciated!

generally you an find the problem by re-tracing your steps. I would pull the tank again, check the battery connections, check that the new battery actaully has a charge, make sure the ground wire and power wire are securely connected.

Does the biek do anything when you turn the key on? lights, but no crank, or just straight up nothing? If the lights come on, double check the kickstand safety switch and make sure the clutch safety switch are working correctly.

Sorry for the late reply, i cleaned the fuses and i suddenly have power. Now my problem is when i turn the key to the start position everything works fine, but when i press the start button the red oil light comes on and nothing happens (bike doesnt turn over), now i know this might seem very basic and probably just need oil but could this also mean something else as to why it won't start.

I suspect the light comes on as the key position gave it power. Now if it were running and had oil pressure the light would go off if everything is working. Off hand I would say this is normal and it means nothing.


As stated above, I'd pull those fuses and recheck them. Maybe you swapped spots with lower rated fuse into a high amperage spot and blew the fuse.

Did you add the acid to the battery; was it new and just filled, has it ever been charged, can you connect a volt meter to it and flip the head lights on and get a voltage reading?????

Start with the fuses, check the battery, maybe even pull the battery and have it load tested at an automotive store.
