16K miles service - need opinions on dealer charge

Hi All,

Well I have just recently spent some extra money on my FZ6. I have bought front and rear tires (Pirelli Diablo Strada's from Kneedraggers for $255 all shipping included, and awesome deal), got front and rear sprockets (steel sunstar) with 530 D.I.D. x ring gold chain for $190 shipped from ApexMoto (recommended by CaliRider - Thx on that), new sintered front brakes from the dealer I have bought the bike from with spark plugs for $125 shipped.

Well went to the local yamaha dealer and told them that they need to install all these parts for me with the 16K miles service, and they have quoted me at $500 all included for the labor with 16k miles service.
Do you guys think this is too much money, and does anyone know what do they do with 16K service at the dealer. I know they will change spark plugs and oil plus check the bike out and what not. Is there anything else that they might do?

Tires installed 80$-100$
Spark plugs 80$-100$
Pads installed plug change fluid and bleed (if it were my bike) 80$-100$
Install chain 80$-100$
Oil change 50$-75$
Sounds about right.

Or you could do it yourself, or find one of the guys on here that lives near you, you guys do it, spend maybe 100-150 at the most on tools, and dinner and what not for whoever helps. You learn how to do the work, and everybody is happy and you save 350$400$ bucks.

Per the manual, they will also (should) repack swingarm bearings, and drain and fill your coolant. Both of which are a job you could tackle yourself as Steve said earlier.

I told them about it and they said this is a complete different day install that would run me about $525 for wheel barring and swing arm repack. I will do this next season. To much money man I tell ya. When it comes to these things I would rather not do it myself. I am not that skilled to take upon myself. Only things I do myself i change my own oil...

That sounds about right.

The spark plugs and oil change can definately be done yourself. This should cut the cost to around 1/2 and the tooks required are very minimal (a wrench to get off the old filter, a wrench for the drain bolt, a new filter, oil, a funnel, a drain pan, a piece of aluminum foil to keep the oil from running back on the bike, and new spark plugs are about it).

The sprockets are easy enough to do, but the chain might not be (I never trust myself staking a link - clip-on is no problem). There's also no point in changing the sprockets and chain at different times. The tires should be balanced, which most of us don't have the equipment to do, and there's also the issue of getting them on/off the rims. You could save money on tire change by removing the wheels and just taking them in, although they'll have the rear tire off anyway if you decide to have them do the chain/sprockets.

Try to do the spark plugs and oil change yourself.

LOL...I see your point. I would do it like this but I don't know anyone here on forum that lives in NJ. I am really all about learning how to do it my self but I have no guidance on like this, thats why dealer was my only option. Do it your self with a guidance of others is the way to go but no choice.
ANYONE IN NJ that is a mechanic, and would like to make some extra money on the side and help a brother out...:rockon:

Just FYI

I never had a 16K service done on my bike.

I have changed the oil and filters every 3K miles. I just changed my plugs at 20K miles ( there is a nice how to thread on that ) and I changed out my coolant last month ( I used 85% Distilled Watter, 10% coolant, 5% Wetter Better ) Hit search on Wetter Better if you don't know what it is.

Haven't changed out my brake fluids yet, but I have a friend who sold me on this device that will pump out all the brake fluids in your lines, without getting or trapping any air. The company name is Motive. I have to call them and see which model will fit a motorcycle.

FWIW, I trust my ability to learn how to work on the purely mechanical parts of my motorcycles a lot more than other people who don't know or care about me and are rushing to get through their backlog.

You can learn to do all of the maintence yourself if you have a slight bit of mechanical ability and some PAITENCE!! If you get confused, or agravated just take a break.

None of this stuff is hard, and everything you want to do has a how to on the forum with pictures.

I was afraid to do my own service, but once I did one (oil change) and saw that it was simple if you can follow directions, then I haven't feared doing any of it. It'll save you tons of cash. Then you can start doing it to your cars too...saving tons of cash LOL...which then gets spent on car repairs you can't do LOL
