    Rock killed my radiator fan

A slightly different perspective on this fan weakness: I have a 2007 FZ6 and in the summer of 2008 I was riding in Chico CA with the ambient temperature around 100 degrees when I noticed that the coolant temperature ( that normally stayed below 190 ) was around 220 and climbing. When I...

    Buying Used 08 FZ6 Question

Just buy it ! The price is good and it is a low-mileage bike. It has been examined by a shop and pronounced sound. Don't lose sight of the fact that you are considering an excellent model of bike- the FZ6 is not just "any old bike". My advice is to buy the bike before someone else does...

24 hour newbie goes down; seeking feedback

You can also spin the bike around on the centerstand by tipping it slightly toward you and carefully spinning it, much like the sidestand spin. They also make centerstand turntables if you want to go tech with it. I have seen some steep Atlanta driveways like you describe and backing a bike...

    bd43's 07 Headlight Mod Part 1

Did the BD43 headlight mod last weekend and it went very well and gave me a chance to clean the bike and look some things over while it was apart. I drained most of the gas from the tank and took it completely off- can't imagine why anyone would want to do that work with the gas tank in the...

How long to charge battery RUNNING?

Agreed- temperature shouldn't be much of a factor around Nashville.

How long to charge battery RUNNING?

32 degrees ? I suspect temperature induced problems more than battery problems. Where do you live? How long do you ride the bike on an average ride ? What weight oil are you using ? If it was 32 degrees when you tried to start the bike, what was the temp an hour or two before that ?

Almost got run over by a jealous cager

I ride all over the US and can assure you that drivers are bad (and getting worse everywhere) but FWIW - on average- California drivers do tailgate more aggressively than any others I have noticed. When confronted with a dangerous driver, the best thing is to get away from them without any...

    install a fuel cutoff valve?

My tank (2007) has been off several times with no leaks or problems- just be very careful in disconnecting the fuel line and remember how to re-connect it. Plan a soft place (old blanket) to set the tank on before you remove it. If you tug gently, you can remove the vent lines before removing...

    Cooling Fan runs constantly

The parts and wiring diagram is available on the Yamaha website. Having replaced the fan assembly after a rock got stuck between it and the radiator, I can assure you that it is not something you want to dig into if you have a choice. Is the bike still under warranty?

    Decisions

So true, so true! There are plenty of people running around with degrees who aren't too bright. You can't fix stupid, but lack of education is fixable- if you have a hang-up with the lack of a sheepskin, get one - otherwise just get busy. If you need more elaboration, watch "The Wizard...

    Decisions

It sounds like keeping the Midas job is an easy choice- you will like your life better and you will have a sense of accomplishment as time goes on. Learn the work, up the profits, buy the place, and then make it work for you (rather than you work for it). Tell the oc guy who is breaking...

Q - How much Winter Riding is enough?

I agree with this in general and when I say "run the bike" in winter, I mean ride the bike so that it gets the oil completely warm. If weather makes this impossible, a dyno is probably the only other way to warm it up- and that isn't practical. Living in northern states like Wisconsin makes...

Q - How much Winter Riding is enough?

IMHO, fifteen or twenty minutes of riding once a month is enough- and put some Sta-bil in the fuel if you are concerned about fuel degredation. That's the most I've done for any of my bikes for the last fifteen years and never had any trouble. I think all the fuss about battery "tending" and...

    need storage, hard cases?

A magnetic tank bag is very handy too- especially one with a map holder on top. Just make sure the one you like fits the tank before you buy it, and a safety strap for the tank bag is a good feature too. The advantage to magnetic is that you can take it off in about two seconds and carry it in...

    need storage, hard cases?

I like having both top and side cases so you can pack either way (or both) depending on your ride. Also recommend top-loading side cases so stuff doesn't fall out when they are opened- and they make decent ice chests in a pinch. I've had very good experiences with Givi cases.

    Check your fan!

I noticed the fan on my 07 not working two months ago and discovered the pebble problem. It seems to have ruined the fan motor and if they cost $300, I'll be riding without the aid of the fan. It gets a bit dicey in stop-and-go traffic- this must be a weak point on the FZ6. Interesting to...

    Great Garage Tool!

I didn't realize you have loft storage above the hoist- that complicates things a bit. You will probably never have a problem with the setup the way it is- but- lift more weight, add shock loading, age, it could split the lumber. If the mounting tube is attached to 2 trusses, the quickest and...

    Great Garage Tool!

That's nice, and you might want to consider running a couple of steel spanner straps from the angle-iron mount brackets to the top chord of the truss before you pull the wood apart on the bottom chord. The overall truss is extremely strong, but it is designed to carry a top load and it is best...

    Would this help?

This sort of campaign might help a little, but IMHO most of the brain-dead drivers in the USA would respond to nothing less than a severe beating before becoming more considerate drivers. It seems that more and more people suffer from a syndrome some call "oppositional defiance" whereby they...
