Condom in brake fluid top up chamber ?

Thanks guys - really useful. I never knew this - I Goggled it following your tip. Google suggests that, as well as what you say, the membranes have another purpose - that is the membrane-baffle unfolds-expands, to take up any "gap" left in the reservoir if any fluid is used up. Without this...

Condom in brake fluid top up chamber ?

Well not exactly a condom but both my front and rear brake fluid reservoirs have a kind of black sheath inside the chambers. What are these for ? Should I remove them ? They make it difficult to see - externally - whether the fluid needs toping up. Do I need them ?

    Battery replacement fz6 sa

Re: Battery replacement fz6 S - done yesterday I have just replaced the battery on my 2005 FZ6 (for the 3rd time) . There are probably 2 methods but I used the first, as follows: R Remove the inner plastic fairing, both sides (a 10 minute job). Remove only the 2 bolts securing the front...

    Chain tension adjusting

Thanks guys, of course it is so obvious now you mention it. I now see one bolt which (I guess) goes through the wheel hub. The "head of the bolt" did look like a shallow nut but I see there is only one nut. Thank you.

    Chain tension adjusting

The offical service manual states that one must losen the rear axle nut (singular) on the chain side swingarm before turning the 2 x 2 sets of chain adjustmnet nuts (plural). I also saw an old post here that referred to only one rear axle nut needing to be losened. However, I have seen...

    4th battery = Electrical charging fault ?

Thanks guys for all your comments. After checking the voltages, with a multimeter connected to the terminals, I posted my query yesterday. So following your comments, I went to a garage today and they went through the same checks, then they put my battery on a meter. They also checked...

    4th battery = Electrical charging fault ?

My late 2004 FZ6 is on its fourth battery in 6 years wit the replacements being installed in 2005 (under warranty), 2007 and September 2009. In the past week I have had to bump start my bike 5 times and yesterday twice, even after a long run. As I turn the ignition switch, the engine turns...

    Stiff ignition key

Thanks guys - I will give it a go; I have ordered some dry graphite powder. Here in the UK I can buy a degreasant called "Gunk" - have you heard of it ? If I squirt the degreasant down the ignition key hole, I guess that will leave me with a load of wet detrius down the hole ? Maybe I can...

    Stiff ignition key

I have tried WD-40, 3-in-1 oil and graphite in the past but they seem to provide short term palliatives instead of fixing the problem. Can I / should I / how can I take the lock mechanism apart and really give it a good dose of lube inside the workings ?

Petrol / gas smell from bike in garage

My FZ6 currently runs really well and its a great bike. It never smells of anything. However, my son's friend has just bought an used Honda 2-stroke, it is a 125cc with a sporty look and sound but I do not know the precise model. Anyway, sometimes I come home and find a strong smell of...

    Clonky gearchange when stationary

I noticed that the gearchange on my late 2004 FZ6 is sounding a bit notchy / clunky but I cannot say it is a new issue of whether I just never noticed it before (“boiled frog syndrome”). Anyway after reading a few posts, and seeing the FZ6 rather unkindly described as “aka the clonker” I...

Key gets stuck in fuel filler cap

Squirting WD40 down the hole where the key goes does not cure my problem. My key is getting stuck in the fuel filler cap and / or intermttently will not turn. I cannot see a diagram in the full Yamaha Servicve Manual- does anyone have a drawing please of how the mechanism goes togther or...

    19mm Hex

19mm Hex - Great solutions - thanks guys but.. The 17, 19, 22mm etc multi socket looks good but, for example, if you want to use the 19mm size, does the protruding 17mm part prevent one from getting the 19mm size into place ?

    Squeaking brakes?

Personally, I find the EBC pads better than the OEM pads and I usually change them well before they really need it; I do not want to have to change them 4 months after I have done my annual service. I have never had to get the rotors resurfaced or replaced in any of my motorcycles (this is...
