I got a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop!!!!! It's awesome. The only thing I don't like about it is; it takes forever to turn on and shut down.

You don't actually shut it down and switch it off do you? The idea with laptops is just to shut the lid, that way it's faster to start. Lift lid, sign in.

I don't know anything about laptops....so yeah, I've been doing that (shutting it down). I have noticed that it is faster starting by shutting the lid, but wasn't sure if that would hurt the computer. When do you suggest turning it off?

I normally switch mine off once a year, or when I'm in an airport about to fly. In other words I never switch mine off if I can avoid it. Doesn't hurt them as long as you plug it in to charge the battery now and again.

It depends how low you not gonna use it, because just shutting the lid will kill the battery if you do that overnight, no? I usually always shut down (turn off) once i'm done using it unless i need to go to lunch or something then i'll close the lid to instead of leaving it on for no reason. Closing the lid just puts it in a "sleep" mode

No, mine normally lasts a week or more with the lid closed and nothing being done with it, perhaps longer I've never really gone longer than a week without using one of my laptops. I did leave one for a month before, on my desk doing nothing, and found teh battery was dead. I plugged it in and it just started up in resume mode instead and carried on from where I'd left it.

You can change the power settings for battery and plugged in operation. When you close the cover, you can set it up to hibernate.
The reason for the long boot times is Vista. I backdated to XP Media Center Edition when I purchased mine and could not be happier, I HATED VISTA.

Vista is alright since SP1... it's running 24/7 at home with no problems. Like the transition from 98 to XP (when everybody wanted to keep running their 98 and ended up on XP 6months later), everybody will end up on Vista in no time, simply because they won`t have much of a choice if they'll want to run newer softwares/drivers/etc... the sooner you do it, the better off you`ll be imho :thumbup:

yup if i was in the mood for dropping $4000 i would buy a mac book pro, amazing lap top use them for work, however dell will prob be what i go with. You can also change the startup menu. take many programs out of it so it will start up faster on xp it is msconfig not sure if it is the same with vista....
