According to the lap times posted by professional riders on a closed course and not just one course but many. These are box stock bikes being used and the R1 couldn't post the best time at any of them, not one. I happen to like the R1 and I've followed them since 1998 as well as put more than a few butt miles on the forerunner Thunderace. I love Yamaha but the clock isn't falling their way in terms of performance.

Ok, so you are speaking purely of closed-circuit lap times. Most of the reviewers here all said that it wasn't necessarily the fastest, but it had the best combination of all factors (price, everyday rideability, road handling, track handling, speed, etc...) and was therefore the best.
 
Now that's the way to solve the tick! Congrats Danny! Don't worry about the trade and the problem. If they didn't take the time to check it out then shame on them! If they do ask anything, just say "It has always sounded like that. I thought that was normal!" Then find someplace else to service the R1. :D

One thing I admire about the R1 is it tries to do new things. It's got a digital throttle, slipper clutch, special intake...which are all technological breakthroughs only Yamaha tried. There are certain companies that are spamming the same stuff year after year:
HONDA

That's when Yamaha steps up and says, "Let's evolve!!"

The problem is new technology requires a significant amount of funding in order to survive.

I think the R1 is one of the best bikes, because it doesn't fall into the dangerous cycle of cloning.

Lots of new technology that will undoubtedly trickle down to other Yamaha bikes in the future.

I'd like to get one myself once my FZ6 is paid off; and the kid's braces; and the '06 Suburban...........

Congrats! I have to say, I had the white Daytona 675 delivered this weekend and after a few hours on it I took the FZ for a spin. Yes, more comfortable on the wrists but it felt like a bus. More time and I'll have a better comparison.
 
I have a little over 100 miles on it so far and I love it. in compairison to the FZ6. the R-1 has gobs more power. the seat is way more comfee on the FZ. the bars are smoother (no vibration at all) on the R1, your heels get hot on the R1, the exhaust heat is noticeable. for me the ergos are more comfortable on the R1( - the hard seat) I rode 100 miles straight and my hands never once got numb. wind protection feels smoother in a 1/2 tuck on the R1 at speed (no helmet buffering) I'll add more to the comparison once I log more miles. here are some quick facts though
80MPH= 5500 RPM in 6th gear
122MPH = 13500 RPM in 2nd gear
161MPH = 10700RPM in 6th gear and the bike isn't even close to signing off

236 feet per second. WOOOOOT!!!!!!!
 
Yeah she has about 20 mph left. I believe there was some trade agreement with Japan, 186mph is the limiting factor on the Jap bikes from the factory.
