I came to my dad's house Monday night to help him with some stuff and yesterday he came home from work and he had a towel wrapped around his head and his arm. He removes the towel from his head and it looks like he got shot in the head. I asked him what happened and he said he was on top of a ladder that was on a scafle (sp?) and the ladder slipped out at the bottom and he fell 15ft., head first, right onto the concrete. I said I was gonna take him to the hospital and he refused to go!

I called my sister in-law so he could hear what she thought (she works in the ER) and she said that even though he's walking around, he could have a broken neck. After 7 hours, I finally convinced him to go. We got there around 9pm and didn't get out of there til 2am. They did a CAT scan (thank god nothing was broken) and he got 5 stitches in his forehead. His forehead is really swollen, his wrists are sprained, his neck is sore and he has a black eye. He's all fubar.

And if that's not bad enough, his insurance ran out 2 weeks ago.

Bad as it is he's very lucky. To be alive. I don't know what the odds are, but for him to be walking around after that with nothing broken or bleeding internally is great news. You absolutely did the right thing by forcing him to go to ER. One of my neighbors had a horrible headache last week (they said she was screaming in pain) and family didn't force her go to ER. She died several hours later from burst blood vessel in her brain. :shakehead:

Hope your dad recovers quickly.

Ouff, sorry to hear that. I hope your dad recovers quickly. If he is anything like my own dad, he will try to do alot too soon.. try and keep him resting.

Take care,

Deb

Glad he is OK... as a professional Roofing contractor... I have heard stories like this for over 20 years... Ladders and the layman sometimes don't mix well. Tell your dad to move to Canada if he is going to continue to climb ladders... at least he would get free health care LOL..... I have personally fallen only twice in 23 years (however, that is very low, since I am on a ladder pretty much every day)... Other than the odd cut, no major injuries to this date.. knock on wood of course.

OMG! Glad to hear he's not seriously hurt! Best wishes for his speedy recovery!

Thanks all! Much appreciated.

Wow! That is terrible. I watched a story similar to that on TV. My sister in-law said she has seen patients walk around for a week, not knowing they have a broken neck....they sneeze and they become paralyzed or die.

He is very accident prone. He cut his fingers off when he was about 16, while cutting tile.

I was kinda mad at him when he told me what he was doing. I told him that that was very stupid. As we were walking out of the ER I asked him, "Now......what did you learn from this?" And he said,"not to stand on a ladder that is on top of a scafle." He is very stubborn and unfortunately, he will probably do it again.

He was so concerned with having no medical, he was willing to possibly die to save some money.

Wow, he's lucky it didn't turn out worse! Glad he'll be okay in the end. And I know what it's like dealing with stubborn people that don't want to go to the hospital...my late wife was like that, and me too a little! Glad you were able to talk him into going.

Never nice to hear, when i read things like this, a pain runs through me as if i feel it, but can only imagine. Yea here in oz we also have free medical (we pay a levy with our tax) and can also have private health insurance, but yeh im really sorry to hear j .

Glad to hear he is ok and that he listened to you folks. When we dads and grampas get older we sometimes think we know better cause we get stubborn.
Sometimes we listen, a good thing. In this case a very good thing.

Ouch! I'm glad to hear he was just banged up at bit. I've heard more stories of people fall and hurting them selves very badly or worse.

Good to hear that he's okay. Good for you for insisting on going to the hospital. I'm sure Nelly has some seen some injuries that look ok on the outside but cat scans tell a different story.

Hope he heals up quick!

Was your dad on the job, working for his employer when he fell? If so, doesn't California have worker's compensation to cover treatment for on the job injuries?
Oh, fyi, it's scaffold.
