2005 Water Pump Leak Help.

Hello everyone! I just noticed my FZ is leaking coolant at the water pump. It's a very small leak, won't leak unless it is pretty warm. Does this water pump have a weep hole like the automotive ones? Is this a sign that it's going to get worse? Is the seal part of the pump or is it separate, and lastly can I do it myself? Sorry for so many questions. I just don't feel comfortable riding this way. I'm so bummed out, it only has 2100 miles and in almost new condition. I still love it though! Thanks in advance.

Yes the water pump have a weep hole.
The small leak you refer, is allways a leak and so not good at all.
The same happened to me and the bike only had 500 km...
It is very simple to repair but not at home. In half an hour (in the yamaha dealer) the pump was disassembled and repaired with new seals and gaskets.

Not for sure what the water pump is like on the FZ6, but I assume it would be the normal water pump...I would check the manuals that you can download here.
I replaced the seals and gaskets on my 1986 Yamaha Venture Royal. Pretty easy...I think that it took me about an hour...there were a few fairings that I had to take off.

Not sure what I will do. Its under USA warrenty but that means I have to haul it down to the USA. May just have the dealer fix it here, or I may replace the pump myself.

I have very little experience with bikes. How difficult is it to replace the entire water pump on a 2007?

Looks easy enough. Has anyone here done it?

I dont think the dealer would do that... if they do, get ahold of yamaha's worldwide headquarters and let them know what is going on and you should be able to get it fixed under warranty in canada. good luck

make sure to keep it topped up and let the dealer worry about it sounds like a gasket problem as many have stated.

Nope no warrenty in Canada they tell me, have to take it back to the USA, 4 hour drive. I dont mind paying the dealer here in Kamloops they are awesome. I may have worked a deal on a bike there if they had some 2007 instock as I really wanted a red one.

They told me 1.8 hrs labour at 100 bucks an hour plus parts to repair. May just do it myself

Take it apart yourself. I dont know about you guys but i like doing repairs myself. On the plus side if you cant figure it out you will save money on the repair because it is already disassembled.........:rockon:

Yes good point. It is coming out of the tell tale (weep hole) most likely the pump seal on the impeller. I think you may be able to buy the whole pump assembled, if so its 3 hoses and two bolts and it is done. Dont even have to take pump apart.

have you tried to call yamaha's HQ? what if you lived in the US, bought one, got a job in Canada, moved there, and had a problem with your bike while still under warranty? That seems kinda fishy to me........ how about a call to another dealer?

I knew I would not have warranty in Canada before I bought. I saved almost 3k from buying in USA.

I think I am going to take it apart myself and repair it.
Anyone done this before?

not on the bike but on the car. have you looked over the service manual? It cant be that hard.... I would always look over the service manual first before i even loosen one bolt just to get a mental picture of what was in store for me and then guesstimate about 2-3 hours more than you think it will take... just in case

That would be even easier. Nothing better than being able to replace the whole thing in one shot.

I bought this bike at a dealership. It only came with a 30 day warranty. I just noticed this last week, which is roughly 5 weeks since purchased. I will try taking it back and see what happens. It looks fairly easy to fix, I think! I have replaced water pumps from previous cars I've owned. So I wouldn't be afraid of doing it myself. It just sucks that such a new bike and then this. I'm still 100% happy that I have it though. I still have my 1996 Suzuki Katana 600 and let me tell you it's night and day diference.

Where is a good place to buy stock parts from?

I can't beleive it's been over a year now. I forgot to update on this, thought I did. I ended replacing the water pump assembly, I found all of the parts in stock at Chapparral motorsportsin San Bernardino. Cost about 75 bucks, I saved a bundle on the labor cost, very kewl!!

Pretty easy to install, just make sure to top off with quality antifreeze.

Oh and to update a year later, NO LEAKS!!!!
