back in December b4 i got hurt i changed the rear sprocket +2 to a 48. I took the bike out for the first time ttoday for about 15 minuts. Well im not sure if it was not rideing for allmost 6 mmonths or "HOLY CRAP", THE FRONT CAME UP SO SOON". I will take my time, but going +2 in the rear (and thats the bike rear) gives it so much more BITE. This should be one of the mods done ASAP.
 
Well, glad to hear it really improves the zip. But, n-no-way am I going to do this mod. I want good mileage, lower RPM's for cruising. Curious how much your mileage and RPM's change. How many RPM's at 65 MPH? It's around 5300 RPM's for stock sprockets.

Spare those horses a little, you got a nice long riding season ahead. Did you upgrade the chain as well? Also out of interest why did you do the rear when the front is the cheaper option?

I don't think that the speedo and RPM will corallate against stock gearing. I know it will be out but how out I am not sure. I think a speedo healer would be of great use.

I have no idea mate,
I guess it may be working harder, but the wear would also be along the drive shaft to as that has to turn faster. I am people mechanic and am more than happy to listen to those who are more mechanised than me.
I was thinking that two extra teeth at the back would be much larger and probably take up all of the stock chain free play.

If it does the difference is not noticable by much. If a stock chain goes 20,000 miles before you need to change it, the smaller sprocket might take 1000 miles off of that.

I know plenty of people that have 18 and 19 thousand miles on chains with a smaller front sprocket.

My sprockets right now are one down in the front and 2 up in the back. I just got back from lunch and my RPMs were at 5500 at 65. NOt much different than stock. My last tank of gas carried me 198 miles before i filled up so i think my gas milage is pretty good since i only put in 4.35 gallons in. That is 45.5 MPG, not bad compared to my truck.:thumbup:



I hope this helps and by the way, the sprocket setup i have makes the bike 10 times better on acceleration.:Sport:
 
i bought the 520 conversion kit, Red chain, Black rear sprocket +2, and i still have the front sprocket -1 which i didnt get around to.
 
anyone go smaller in the rear to improve mileage for fuel economy? what is the power to savings ratio?

I am sure it would work on the same ratio as the power to more consumption ratio
 
Well if you don`t care about your MPG (I mean comon, it`s a difference of what, $2 or $3 per tank??? I don`t get why anyone would care), dropping a tooth in the front just gives you more "useable power"... in other words for any given speed, your rpm will be higher compared to stock.

So say with stock gearing you are cruising at 50mph @ 5000rpm in third... now you`ll be going 50mph @ 7000rpm in third, or in other words you`ll have more torque available to you for that speed... and this goes pretty much for the whole powerband.

Now, the side effects:
- speedo error increased (I don`t care I have the koso :D)
- less MPG (I don`t care about $2 a week difference)
- less top speed in each gears (on the FZ, you won`t notice a difference in top speed)
- higher engine buzz at any given speed (obviously)... noticable difference above 80mph, but nothing bad.

I`ve been experimenting with it all day yesterday and for me, it`s the best mod I`ve done to my bike by far. It is smoother and just gives you more torque for city and freeway driving.... great stuff.

Plus you can try it for $30... if you don`t like it, put your stock sprocket back on and sell the other.

yeah, i probably won't do it, but i am having a bit of $ stress today... so the MPG thing is coming to the front of my mind...

I dont think it would save you much money. Maybe a mile per gallon better, but until someone has done it we will be guessing...........................................................someone willing to buy the sprocket to let us know?:Sport:

and can anyone who has this setting write us what their rpm is on 60 mph, 70 mph so that we could compare with stock setup,,or if you have a comparison of your own to let us know...

i honestly am thinking to do this as my last mod but i dont know how much it effects the rpms on a highway....i wouldnt mind a 500 rpm increase but more than that would make me think twice...
 
Let's not overlook that higher RPM's mean faster engine wear. Obviously, you plan on your engine wearing out faster with such a sprocket change. But, for some, I know, this is acceptable. The FZ6 is already a relatively high RPM machine. If I ever move to a liter bike, one reason will be because the engine turns over slower and is longer lasting.

-1/+2 will be drastic IMO... why not try the -1 in the front first and see how you like it? If it`s still not enough go with the +2 in the rear on top of it...

and no, -I think- you can keep your stock chain with -1/+2... anything more than that and you`ll need a new chain.

I am sorry but where are you getting your facts from?

an R1 engine lasts longer than a 600 engine because it "turns over slower?"? hmmm

And I don`t think there is any data out there supporting your statement that dropping a tooth in the front will decrease engine life... your engine is exactly the same, and its output as well... yes you`re running higher rpms on average, but the impact on engine wear is insignificant imho. The R6 engine was designed to run at very high rpm all day long, I don`t think going from 5k to 6k or 7k on average will make any measurable difference.
