Took the bike to a closed range today and ran a bit of practice (small oval, large oval and MSF peanut).

It's gonna take some time getting used to. Really feels like this bike will be much happier at higher speeds. I was running out of space before the *happy* zone.

The 'happy zone' starts at 8k rpm's, then comes online at 10k thru redline, wind it up!

Yeah.. I was running out of realestate long before reaching 8k and it's not just the RPMs.. I think turning will be much better at speed. These bikes are just not built to go slow.

Had good weather for it!

You have a track in mind for higher speeds?

Took mine out for a 50 mile run on twisties & freeway. Twas 52 when I started. Cooled off as the sun headed for the horizon and went behind clouds. Based on predictions that's probably my last ride till well after New Year.

They do quicken up a tad bit at speed, it's the R's clip-ons that numb it's left to right flick, at least you get ride the upgraded 5SL powerplant, with the R1's front suspension and brakes, 2005 was a good year for the R6.

Nice!
I assume the R6 handles a lot better than the FZ6, but if you were to compare only power and open throttle rush, does the R6 feel that much quicker once you get up in the rpm?

I mean, if you were to nail both of them and go through the gears, shifting at the optimal spot for both, would the FZ6 even have a chance, at least until you reach 120ish, or would it be left on the spot?

I love pulling the FZ6 up to around 13000rpm, i can only imagine what having an extra 2000 rpm must be like...

Also, having owned the FZ6, FZ1, and R6 which one do you prefer, are you more into the mad revving of the R6, the low end power of the FZ1, or the do it all of the FZ6?

Lots of good questions there, Carlos

Handling is subjective here. I would much rather have FZ6 for the street. R6 is the opposite of maneuverable (good luck trying to do a tight u-turn on that thing!) and at slower speeds, FZ6 would be my choice. I've yet to get R6 up to *proper* speed, but having ridden other supersport bikes, I know that's where it'll make all the difference. Instead of somewhat lazy steering, R6 will turn in super quick.
In terms of power though.. to put it simply.. YES.. R6 feels much much quicker. It easily feels as quick as FZ1, if not faster, once you're in the power band.

My guess would be no chance for FZ6 in a drag race.

For my street needs, I prefer FZ1 over FZ6 and R6. FZ1 has less vibration and significantly more low end than FZ6 and compared to R6.. it's incredibly comfortable and very maneuverable in slower / tighter situations.
I stand by what I've been saying for a while.. R6 (or any other supersport bike) is a poor choice for the street. Less comfortable, stiffer suspension, very difficult to maneuver in tight, slow speed situations.

No one bike can be best at everything, which is why it's so important to identify what matters to you most and to be certain you can deal with the things the bike does not do as well when choosing one.

In addition to that, people are very different when it comes to comfort and preferences. For example, there are few people on FZ1 board who claim they were more comfortable on R6.
One guy actually sold his FZ1 because he found it terribly uncomfortable and switched to R1.

Your wife will benefit from "New and Improved Abs" if you ride that enough!!! lol

Both the R's are back breakers. The 6 more so than the 1. But maybe that depends on ones fit to said machine....

I'm pretty sure both bikes are 11 sec machines. FZ at the high end and the R at the low end. So I'd bet skills, launch, weight transfer, tire pressure and all that and FZ could take a lesser rider on an R6.

I'll place the 1/4 on my todo list this summer!

That's nuts! No disrespect, but there's about a 23-24 degree difference in forward lean between the FZ1 and an R1? Whatever makes a person happy tho, indeed. More Fun? Possibly. More comfortable? hmm..

www.cycle-ergo.com - I used this a great deal to find the right bike that gave me the stance I wanted, then I went and sat on em.

And then there's this video fz6r vs r6 for Carlos to check. The 6R isn't quite the same as the FZ6 but their times are almost identical for comparison to an R6, and the upright stance angle is nearly identical.

I looked up some 1/4 mile times on drag-times. Fastest stock FZ6 runs 11.3. Slowest R6 on there runs it in 10.6, but to be fair it's re-geared. Next gen mostly stock R6 does it in 10.3. Stock FZ1 does it in 10 flat.

More comfy? for me, yes! I quickly realized the FZ6's upright ergos and soft seat were not for me, so I switched to clip-ons, a firm seat, and high rear sets, now I can do all day road trips pain free, but to each there own.

Man. I keep trying to figure out my next move. I want exhaust for the FZ6, but an R6 track bike sure would scratch that itch I've been having lately. There are so many mid-2000's R6's on Craigslist here... I'm torn. Hard to justify exhaust when another $1500 gets you onto a decent racer.

Eric try using the stomp grip more. This will take the weight off your wrist s and allow you to do slow maneuvers easier. Also back off the steering damper if you're using one.

You'll get used to it.

My guess would be no chance for FZ6 in a drag race.

.

I went heads up with a R6 on my FZ6 in 1/8 mile and it came down to riders. I had about 2 bikes at the big end so there is definitely a chance, the good old FZ will hang with the Super Sport bikes

why would anyone go from the FZ1 to the R1 for comfort? thats crazy.

Well yeah. I mean, riders with equal skills and well used to bikes.. I think R6 should pull out quite a bit faster.. particularly in longer race.

I saw another thread about top speeds just now, that doesn't do much for me. Much rather run those numbers in the corners.
With that said, all good vehicles must be taken to the drag strip at least once in their life! Love to if see Crisis can dip into the mid 11s on the 1320 w/me as the rider!
The gutsy question is, can we drop the tire pressure for bite and is it worth landing on your can?

/end thread jack
