These critters are something else to photo - I've been able to stop motion with as low as 1/250 (no flash) but only if the wing is in a state of dwell about to change direction. With a flash you can cheat and have it under 1/100th or less. Otherwise stopping the motion requires about 1/1250th sec or better. Of course many like the blur of the wing in motion so its all about user preference! I like both its just entertaining to me to try and stop motion and grab the colors and shapes from their high speed wings!

FinalImpact you are in luck! I dont ever see these in SLC, but I was in the right place at the right time not too long ago. I only had my cell phone camera handy, but I think they turned out decent. Enjoy the breast clouds!

The flash is a bit harsh when fired directly, see if you could diffuse it with a white paper to soften it a bit. Also, maybe you could increase the aperture a bit - maybe a couple of stops(f8?) to compensate the diffused flash. It would certainly give it a more subtle colors and the eyes will be captured better.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'd like to use a larger aperture but the depth of field seems to then become razor thin. I have many shots where I'm focused on the body and the head will be all soft.

Might be a result of using a massive focal length so close to the subject maybe? With the smaller aperture I can get the whole bird in focus.

Regarding the built-in flash, I'm looking at getting an aftermarket one and a softener. Or perhaps get the birds in more natural light as the flash scares them off.

Ah!! the aperture - dof - exposure deadlock!! You could also see if moving back helps - its a 14MP sensor - you could crop and still get a decent copy.

+1 on the external flash and do get a wireless trigger. Diffuser/bouncing it will help.

Great shot! I'm hunting hummers again now. I covered several of the feeder ports to get the birds at better angles.

Depends on where your image is ... uploaded to this forum as an attachment to a post (which then appears as a thumbnail,) to an album, or on a service like photobucket or imageshack.

Wherever it is you'll need to copy the URL (something like http://somewhere.com/photo.jpg) then click on the Insert Image icon (

) in the post editor and paste the URL there. That will embed the pic into the post.

Let us know where your picture will reside and someone will followup with more details.
