Center Stand Stopper

Has anyone lost their center stand stopper/bumper? The other day, I was leaving work and saw a rubber cylinder laying near my bike. Thought nothing of it... kicked it across the parking lot because I didn't want to step on it while moving the bike, lose footing, etc... I let the bike down off the center stand and didn't think twice about it. The next day I go to leave for work and when I took the bike off the center stand, noticed it had a nice loud "CLANG" when the stand popped up. Again, curious but not really thinking about it. Today, it clangs again as I'm leaving... I get to work and get down on the ground and start inspecting... sure enough, that darn bumper is missing. Thus, I put the two together... Since I always park in or near the same area, I start looking around the parking lot. Down several spaces, I spy the piece, go pick it up and give it a good look. It looks like something new... I go back to the bike and of course, it fits perfectly in the center stand.

So, now I'm a bit concerned... I never lost this on my '05 bike. It is on the opposite side of the stand as far as "using" the center stand. Did Yamaha make the hole bigger? The stopper smaller? Has anyone come up with a solution to keep the part secured? I'm thinking of a dremel and a pair of notches, a quick rustoleum shot of black, then put the stopper in and secure the opening with a black zip-tie. Think of "Closing the letter C" to make an "O" ???

On the throttle side of the bike's center stand is a tab of metal where a rubber stopper, about 1" high by 1" diameter sits in. When the center stand is raised, this is the bumper to keep the stand from a metal-on-metal contact with the bike itself.

Here's a quick MSPaint of the section of center stand and the stopper:

EDIT: Nice idea about the zip tie too. Will o that tomorrow
 
I can't see a better way to make it stay in place for cheaper thus I'm going to do this Saturday morning. I'm doing the notches to be 100% certain that the zip-tie doesn't slide off.

Unless someone else already has a fix for this that is just as easy or easier?
 
i took my centerstand off... no clanging anymore. it was more of a clearance issue with the aftermarket rearsets though. Do you use it alot? I think the bike looks cleaner without it and a nice rear stand could be found for about $100. however in a breakdown it would've been nice to have my centerstand... but they do make some kind of prop that goes on the swingarm side opposite of the kick stand. It's a makeshift rearstand that fits in the seat/trunk.

I mean for the most part, the centerstand isn't really needed. If you don't want to buy a rear stand you could always just hold on to the center stand and the bolts and slide it into place for chain/wheel maintenance. You'd be surprised how much it cleans up the bike without the c-stand

It is my primary stand as I rarely use the side kick stand at all. Tip-overs are far less likely on the center stand. I actually had my bike sink into soft asphault on the center stand and stay standing where the two other bikes nearby both fell over with the kick stand sinking. :thumbup:
 
Guess I should have used the search feature. I just posted about this. Noticed mine was almost off and told my buddy and his was gone. Bikes are new with less than 500km on them.
 
My '08 with over 6k miles on it is still on there..... you guys made me worry.

FzinNH, I dont know what is making yours come off but you method of fixing seems to be easy & permanent....maybe its all the extra dirt thats holding mine on :D

Thanks for this post. I went and checked mine on my '07 and the stopper was still there but beginning to slip out of the slot. I'm going to do the ziptie mod tonight when I get home!!

Has it shrunk in the rain? I have not even noticed it on mine. I will have to check it out.

Make sure you have the Black rustoleum to cover the metal you expose. :D

madmanmaigret, '08 with over 8k on it already? Oh yeah.... Florida! :tard: Weather here sucks! But I still rode the bike in today! :p

How many miles to you have now? I am pretty close to 4k now and i have had the same crappy weather as you...

Rolled 1800 two days ago. I don't have nearly the daily commute you do and I've been busy with the Honey-Do list most nights and weekends. So, not NEARLY enough time in the saddle!
