DIY fork removal...

You don't need any stand at all. Just put about 40lbs on the pillion seat (I've used a bag of cement, also used a bag of potting soil as well) with the bike on the center stand. You can put a jack under the engine as well if you wish with a few wood blocks on it. The center stand is very stable a great balance point on the bike.

no stand at all. put the bike on the center stand and put weight on the rear seat. the front will come off the ground enough to do the job.

No weight needed. Push down on the back of the bike while it is on the center stand and put an empty 1 gallon paint can under the (cold) header pipes and gently rest the bike on top of the can. This is also safer as weight on the back could dislodge and fall off and the bike could topple forward. With the can there, it cannot topple at all.

Or if you can't find a weight, you can tie a rope round the forks, push the back of the bike downwards and tie the rope around something on the ceiling (as I did). It just doesn't work as well as the other methods. I couldn't put anything under the headers as I couldn't be bothered to remove my whole lower fairing to get it out of the way.

reviving this from the dead....

in a few weeks time me and my friend are about to dismantle the forks to do an oil change on the fz. i have a query tho. having a look at the above methods where you place a weight on the pillion seat and a jack or tin of paint underneath the engine, wouldnt it do damage to the exhaust, even if you put a piece of wood to spread the weight? thx

i lifted the front up using a regular stand (front and rear), then lowed the bike onto a big block of wood under the exhaust headers, and took the front stand away. The headers are designed to take the weight so it's fine. I have no center stand on my bike.

I'd advise you to weight the passenger seat (or somehow similarly hold the back tire on the ground), and put something under the headers as a "just in case", and not actually use them to support any weight.

I also highly recommend loosening (not remove, just loosen) the caps of the forks BEFORE removing them from the triple tree.

Resting the nose on the headers is not enough weight that any further action be taken. In fact a round of wood under the header works great. Personally I'd advise the path of ONE or the OTHER but not both as some could end up with it teetering back and forth and risk knocking the bike over.

But yes, a well advised point; loosen any large fasteners, fork caps, axle bolts, etc. . . while on the side stand in gear with the wheels chocked.
