shifter sticks on downshift

i have issues when im coming to a stop or once im stopped if i want to downshift, i cant go from 5-4-3-2 etc sometimes the shifter spring doesnt spring back and i have to release the clutch a little and then it lets me continue to downshift, any ideas? 07 fz6

Close - this is ACTUALLY normal! :thumbup:

I always have to give the clutch a little wiggle when downshifting, especially at the lights - it just lets the teeth mesh a bit better.

Better to downshift coming up to the lights - as this has the added benefit of you being able to nail it if you notice the vehicle behind you not slowing etc.

Check out the shifter linkage. On the left side of the bike, from the shift lever to where it goes in the bike. Try some pb blaster to clean it out and lube it up. Worked great for me!!

cool guys thank i was hoping it wasnt something inside that needed to be tightened, i had a suzuki gs 550 and they had to take cover off to adjust springs i was told

i will say that when i switched to a better motor oil this seemed to stop happening.
do you use a good synth oil?
probably just a case of confirmation bias....

i just changed my oil this week, didnt use synthetic will next time though, have not ridden yet

I would also suggest taking apart the shift linkage, cleaning it and lubing it. It solved this same problem for me.

Basically, you need to clean in the spots indicated below. I did the same thing (just using pb blaster) and it cleared up the issue RIGHT away.

And don't use WD40 at the lube pointed. WD40 is great for many applications and okay in a pinch but it gets gummy after a while. Tri-Flo, or any motor oil will work good.

Hey everyone, just wanted to weigh in on this issue as my 2005 fz6 was not downshifting well at all. Even with messing around on throttle and clutch to engage a gear. No down shifting unless I manually pulled the shifter back up. Now it even shifts through all the gears with the bike off. Took the whole assembly off and lubed the pedal heavily with lithium based grease. It was messy but I worked it in after being reassembled so it would move up and down with little resistance. Back together and the whole thing shifts better than when I bought it. You can easily check to see if it's an issue if you detach the main ball going into the transmission and see if your shifter is sticky or if your transmission has no spring. My spring was tight and had no issues. Lube it. And keep soap away from it when washing as there are no rubber seals to keep out moisture.

Just to addd to the above...

As noted, there aren't any seals to keep moisture out. I use Yamaha outboard engine Marine grease which is waterproof and designed to be used in wet conditions.

(its actually used on the main drive shaft on an outboard engine between the shaft and a mid-section bushing, almost always in the water).

Regular wheel bearing grease will last, maybe a month. This product will easily last 2-3 years..

I'd highly recommend it for steering bearings, suspension bearings etc...
