HELP!ck engine lt, bike dying and bucking like a bronco

on my way home from work my bike started running real ruff, breaking down at idle and while holding constant speed, if i twisted the throttle back a little and put the engine under a load it would begin to run smooth, when i came to a red light the check engine light would come on and then go off shortly after i took off. I did do some work to the fuel tank sunday and i was thinking my fuel filter might be getting stoped up so i tried tossing the bike side to side at the redlight and poof everything turned off as if i pulled the key out and my speedo began to flash like it dose when you first turn the bike on about once every few seconds, after a few min the bike came back to life and i went on my way still running ruffer and ruffer and about 8 miles after the first shut down i was driving down a short straight and it did the same thing this time i pulled the clutch in and released and it fired right back up and began to run smooth the rest of the way home so im officially puzzled so someone please help me

The first thing that stands out to me is that with vibration or bouncing, the problem seems to worsen. I would check all electrical connectors. If that doesn't give results, the fact the engine light is on shows the computer is seeing a fault. Since you probably lack the equipment to diagnose, I would take it to a dealer for the diagnosis.

The fact that the warning light came on isn't great, but it means you can do a DIAG on the bike and check for fault codes. They are listed in the manual and on this site. It will give you an idea of where to look.

im crossing my fingers on this one but i beleive the bike "skipping/stalling/stuttering" might have just been attributed to some bad fuel or water in the fuel because i put some lucas fuel stablizer in it and about 5 miles later it was running like a raped ape. and i dug into the wiring harness and wichever relay is run up under the tree was just barely hanging in there, so i zip tied it back together and so far it hasnt flatlined

oh and as far as the ck engine light would it matter that it was only on for maybe 30sec at the longest and as soon as the bike reved back up it went off, but it did that 3 times

Dunno. Most computers hold the last code in memory until you clear it or another code comes down. If your light doesn't come back, I'd say you found your gremlins in the wiring. Of course the only relay I can think of up there, is the flasher. It might have been pulling on something else.

Sounds like a water in the fuel issue or when the fuel becomes hard to burn the coils work extra hard to deliver a spark. So, if the fuel additive fixed it; cool. If not, fire it up in the dark and watch around the coil wires and coil packs to see if any stray sparks are observed.

Hint: because at idle the coils have the greatest saturation (dwell time to build energy), misfire just off idle under load is common.

well i feel like a idiot but i found the problem, the ground was not connected on the battery, i personnaly have not touched the battery since i got the bike but from the signs i should have been able to figure that out sooner with the ck engine lt coming on and off so quick it was reading low voltage, but at least i got it fixed insted of gettin hit up with a 78$perhr flat rate for diagnosis

well i feel like a idiot but i found the problem, the ground was not connected on the battery, i personnaly have not touched the battery since i got the bike but from the signs i should have been able to figure that out sooner with the ck engine lt coming on and off so quick it was reading low voltage, but at least i got it fixed insted of gettin hit up with a 78$perhr flat rate for diagnosis

See that's the thing. Most problems are simple. It's finding them that's sometimes hard. So your not an idiot just because it was something simple. Of course I really don't know you so..... Hahaha! LOL!

Damn I wish I saw this earlier, I had the same exact thing happen and it turned out to be a loose battery connection. I had my bike towed home and felt like an idiot when i realized the problem. At least my insurance includes towing.

aint no way i was gonna call a tow truck i was giving it hell all the way home as long as i kept the bike pinned to 9k+ it was fine
