A left low-side crash on my way to work this week has left my poor 2005 FZ6 in rough shape. It was in a rotary going about 20, slid probably 30ft on the frame slider, the bottom of the engine cover, and the left side of my exhaust and top case. Started right up after, drives straight at highway speeds, no oil leaks, weird noises, or trouble with bent handlebars, levers, or pegs. All in all, pretty lucky. Oh, and I'm sore but fine - my gear is the only real casualty from this so I'll need new pants and jacket (but my Rev it pants and jacket did their job well. The armor on my left elbow could have been in a better place but the knees were perfect.)

So, the exhaust and exhaust shroud are busted and will be replaced. The rear subframe is quite bent/torqued. My question to yall is thusly:

Has anyone attempted to straighten out their subframe following a crash like this? And if so, has anyone had success? failure?

I know I've read on here somewhere that at least one of you used a broom handle or some such redneck brilliance to straighten it out. I'd love to hear your outcomes and possibly follow in your footsteps.

Subframes go regularily on ebay for $100. Cheap for a straight piece IMO. Get the newer style from the 07+ years

So the 07+'s bolt right on? What about all my other stuff like plastic pods, fender elim, turn signals, etc? What makes the 07's better?

I cant tell you if all the plastics n such will bolt up, but the 07'+ have a D ring lock and removable pillion pegs....lucky!

If I remember correctly Wrightme43 straightened his. He has long since left the forum for personal reasons though. If you'd like I can give you him number got contact. He is a super friendly guy and will help you all he can.

Thanks chuck. I'm almost all healed up. If my wounds need some more help, my first allgrain lager (a Vienna that turned into marzen by accident) will be ready next week - that should do the trick!

Michael, sorry to hear this! Glad you're OK though! And she was my first FZ too..... :( I think with some arm strength and a good long pry bar, it can be put back close to normal. Want to do it here in the Busted Knuckle Garage? Let me know!!

hmmmmm batch of homebrew ready...... meeting at busted knuckle garage.....sounds like a group event to me. I'm in!:D

What could possibly go wrong with a bunch of beer drinkers trying to straighten a motorcycle frame..........I think I'll look on youtube, I'm sure it's there somewhere.

Let's make our own video! Who all is coming??? :iconbeer:

I have straightened two FZ6 sub frames...you will need a big tubular shaped piece of wood, of considerable length, a set of spanners to loosen mounting bolts, but not remove...do it with the sub frame on the bike...

Beers is definitely needed too....dutch courage....

is actually not that hard, just a bit of common sense, and some SUBTLE strength.

I was succesful in straightening mine on both occasions!

Update! I inspected the subframe more closely and found some serious signs of damage in the form of crease (steel tubing shouldn't crease, right?) and small cracks. So I went with a replacement from a bike recycler for $130 shipped. Super simple to replace - just needed a T50 torx bit and for some reason my wife already had one in her toolbox. I knew there was a reason I fell in love with her.

Replacement exhaust is on, as is the new givi topcase rack, and I'm back on the road!

Thanks for all the help.

To Chuck and Eric - sorry I couldn't wait for a Busted Knuckle Beer and Bending Bonzana but I'm headed on a 3day overnight trip this weekend and duty called! I'll save some of the marzen for our next group event.

I've got a rear subframe from a 2005 FZ6 that I may be interested in selling. I'm up in the Manchester/Nashua NH area (not far from you). Give me a shout if you're interested. (603)885-3836
