FZ6 Ignition Cover

I'd e-mail them and see if they have one that fits your particular bike...

BTW, you can sand that stock cover down a fair bit to get it smooth without harming anything. I eventually replaced the same cover after the previous owner laid it down on that side and got a good amount of road rash.

As for frame sliders, there's been some posts where the frame slider, when the bike went down, broke off the frame and part of the engine mount itself... At slow speed tip overs I'm sure their ok, but they have contributed to the damage on occasion. Just something to think about...

Yes, the jury is out on frame sliders, there is a school of thought that a "cage" is the better way to go.

As much as I'd like a cage, I'm not sure I'd be willing to pay what one costs. Having said that, I'm going to keep looking, cause I have seen a couple sub $200 delivered

Another thing to consider, I don't think you can get a cage that fits on an FZ6 that has a bellypan on it...if you are considering getting a bellypan, that is.

I'm thinking about it hey... Just gotta decide on my colour scheme and the look I want first. Decisions!

If your going fast enough to do that then your probably facing issues anyway, and thats even before you consider whether the fault is with the design of the slider or the bike.
I'd assume if it was a major issue then insurance companies would be asking if you had them as part of the insurance information, since I'm assuming thats pretty much an instant write off. Although again its pretty dependant on which brand you have, how they connect and what bike you have.

There is also alot of opinion involved in oggies causing extra damage, and very little scientific information going around.

If we where in a court of law I think the word alleged would be afixed to pretty much every statement pertaining to the 'dangers' of oggy nobs.

This aside the benefits are extremely visible and measurable, particularly on faired bikes.

As someone elsewhere said, slight accidents you don't claim insurance on, which means all that minor damage you pay out of your own pocket, or just put up with, and it doesn't take much for a simple fall to get expensive. On the other hand if its serious enough to do major damage then its going to probably be an insurance job anyway, at which point who cares.
I guess if you don't have comprehensive insurance the question is a bit harder.

Its not quite the same but seatbelts are similar, they can cause internal organ damage in some cases, but that doesn't mean people don't use them.

I have Oggies and when I took out the insurance it had no bearing on the premium. So I guess they are for my peace of mind, I have seen a bike with totalled sliders and scratches still on the faring but if there had been no slider the bike would have been a real mess, anything that prevents abit of damage or alot of cosmetic resto, has to be better than nothing

Yeah, you're right. And I was thinking bout it - as much as I believe the sensible option is a cage, I think I'm gonna mimic Geoff and get a belly pan, with the thought of radiator fairing down the track.

On a side note, I found this hose pack on eBay, and the sweet thing is that they can do custom colours. Reckon that it's up to spec Jamie?

YAMAHA FZ6 S2 SILICONE RADIATOR HOSE KIT BLUE 08+ - eBay (item 250686248606 end time Apr-19-11 03:27:24 PDT)

They look like they are going to fit, but blue....yuk!

Go for black, it will make your bike so much easier to sell later in it's life....in fact, just leave the hoses you have on your bike now...OEM Quality is best in this case i think...my 06 hoses still look and work like new.

If you'd recommend stock over these, I'll definitely leave them till they need to be replaced, but I was going to get colour matched yellow (lol). Fark blue!

The broken frames and craked engine blocks (a total loss I suspect) were posted on this forum. I do not know the speed, etc.

I personally, would prefer to replace a cover/fairing than an entire bike, but that's my preference.

I own an 04 FJR with lots more plastic fairings than the FZ and do not have sliders on that either. Its never been dropped.

The FZ6 I bought was used and laid down on its right side at 20-25 mph by my frinds son. It cost me approx $1300 just in new genuine parts (gas tank, side case, full fairing, faing stay, pod, etc) plus my time (half day maybe). Between the discounted cost of the bike ($2,000) and new parts it evened out but looks newer than an 07.

I was putting it out there that TOG's are not "sure all" safety gaurds, just a forwarning to those not aware of the down falls.

My black bike went down at 50km/h, straight on it's side, and a slider saved me' thousands in repair costs...but when we looked at the slider next day, the bolt that connects the slider to the engine mount/ frame was less than 2mm away from hitting the frame and thus cracking the frame mount...which would of been disastrous.

So go figure!

So you're saying that if I lay it down, I should slow down to less than 50km/h? Yeah, I can try that :-D

Or more preferably at no speed at all, except gravity :P

Just presenting the other perspective, since I'm still interested to see whether there is any official reports on the dangers of oggy nobs, and there seems to be a few variables that make the issue less clear cut, such as what the bike is, what brand nobs/sliders, installation of nobs/sliders (been arguements incorrect installation has stopped them shearing off properly in the kind of accident that would cause frame/engine damage), whether they actually caused the damage etc, etc, etc.

There are definately a few people becrying the use of the nobs/sliders, vastly outnumbered by the number of people who have found them extremely useful and money saving (all in different circumstances its important to note, no two accidents are ever exactly the same).
I know from personal experience that my bike has been knocked over a few times, with no damage sustained except slight bar end scratches, and was saved a massive amount of damage recently when someone decided to reverse into/over me.
Of course I have a naked, and Wolfman has also found other products that can protect your engine in similar circumstances.

"I personally, would prefer to replace a cover/fairing than an entire bike, but that's my preference." Is a misleading statement, you are stating that the use of oggyknobs will mean your bike is a write-off instead of just needing to replace a fairing or cover. Sure its a possibility, but its the same as people who say "I drive a car because bike riders die".

Might be seeming to beat a dead horse here, but I think its important to provide the information fairly and accurately so people can make the choice.

No, I understand where you're coming from, and in the same way that I accept the risk that I might die every time I climb on my bike, I need to accept that cosmetic damage is a whole lot easier to cause on a bike, and try to make some small preventative measures. If I lay my bike down at speed and total it, I guess I'll just buy another with the money I saved from a car! If all my friends are buying new Colorados, Landcruisers or Commodores (vauxall in Aus), I can buy my fizzer a few times over, and still have a crapload more fun

It is not a misleading statement, it is MY PERSONAL OPINION. I have been riding dirt bike and street bikes since I was 15, 37 years now. I have had my share of crashes but never a long slide requiring sliders.

I put out that it is a possibility (and it has happened, see below post as well as others) of totaling your bike from the use of them in certain situations. http://www.600riders.com/forum/hall-shame/31532-1st-stunt-attempted-fail-fixable.html

THAT IS A TRUE STATMENT, please don't belittle it should the poor slob who does end up breaking a frame and engine block say, I didn't know that could happen??

And its not the same as people saying "I drive a car because bike riders die". That is flat ignorant.

There are new riders on the forum all the time and do not know the possibility. It doesn't matter to me if you use them or not, its your bike!

I sense a thread getting out of control... I'm gonna use sliders - they might save me two or three drops, then total my bike, they might snap first low speed drop, or they might last 80m when i come off doing a mad ass wheelie down the highway (ba, if i could do one) all i know is that yeah, it gives me a little piece of mind, and for a few dollars, i get some cool lookin 'angry knobs' and feel like i'm doing something to prevent further damage - in addition to reminding myself that if i'm not paying attention, i'm gonna have to pay for it sooner or later. End of thread i think?

So how did the ignition plate go have you installed it yet,, i have been in the same boat when i first got my bike laid it over twice though unfortunately.. except i lost my bike peg and brake lever..
