Well I have got to say that I once went on a swamp tour in Louisiana on my way to New Orleans and it was awesome. At the time it was like being on another planet as I am from the east coast of Canada. No gators or snakes... we have moose and bears.

Well, Wolfman....I'm really looking forward to riding with you and tipping back some drinks as well.

Who knows how your total route will end up, but I'll just point out a few things:

• Most of the mountain passes in California (and the rockies for that matter) should be open by May...sometimes later though (a lot stayed closed into June last year).
  
  
• The Pacific northwest (Oregon / Washington State / British Columbia) is probably best in late summer (August/September).
  
  
• It stops raining in Northern California near the end of May and does not really start again until October. July gets something like 0.05 inches of rain around here on average.
  
  
• California is the only state you can split lanes in.
  
  
• On a sunny NorCal day it can be 105 inland and 60 on the coast (200 miles East/West) so layers are best. However, it won't be humid so shade goes a long way in cooling you off and so does wind.
  
  
• There are lots of good microbrews all over

So when do you arrive???

California??? Yeah, there are some fabulous roads there, but if you want an experience of a lifetime, Wolfman, you need to take Erci's advice and come to Deal's Gap on the Tennessee/North Carolina border. Here's the thing...everyone goes for The Dragon, but what people that have never been there before don't get until they visit is that there are literally TONS of great roads, all within a few miles of there.

How much riding have you done in Northern California?

I love the whole deals gap area and have done over 3,000 miles of riding down there, but NorCal takes the cake. Not only are the roads and scenery better (roads are a bit better but the scenery is no contest, sorry), but the weather is much much better (no daily thunderstorms and oppressive humidity here), the areas are more remote (less traffic), none of the counties are DRY (no alcohol) like they are down south!, and the whole funky/coolness factor is higher.

Just to be clear though, the deals gap area does rock and I highly recommend it to Wolfman if at all possible. Some of the best riding I've done for sure. Most of the people are nice too. :thumbup:

Wow, I would not even know where to begin planning a trip like that!! Each state has something different to offer, which is a very good thing. Wisconsin has many great roads, but you have to look for them. Southern, western and northern WI are great, but the eastern part got flattened by a glacier a millennium ago. Door County is spectacular (along with Washington Island), but the place is just over run with tourists during the summer. Door County's essence is best captured in late fall.

Michigan's Upper Peninsula is very beautiful, especially the Porcupine Mountains by Ontonagon. Actually, any of the Great Lakes are a beautiful sight to behold.

Virgina has some great roads too. I can not remember the names, but Loudon County had some great roads. The Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park was breathtaking in a cage!

As I'm sure others will chime in, each state has ups and downs. Sometime you just can not avoid the tourist traps.

I knocked out 2500km's in 7 days in Tasmania, and could of done more, if i was really serious.... did 26000km's around Europe in 6 weeks, a long long time ago.

4 weeks is about all i could get away from my gig's and kid's, without it turning nasty for me!!!

As mentioned before, Florida might be off your list (roads are plain simple flat and straight). If by any chance you end up down here, let me know, I have a guest room.

Also, if considering the tail of the dragon, that could be an east coast group ride. I've never been there but if added to your list it would be the perfect reason for my first visit to the dragon.

Wow! I am a bit taken aback by the amount of responses in this thread, and am wadsing through the mountains of idea's, links, and offer's of generous hospitality....

I think the best idea for me is to process what i can, and come up with a loose plan to start with, then let everyone pick it all apart, and tell me where i am going wrong, or right!

Money will be a huge issue, and i guess this will be the limiting factor....although i have roughed it before on a big tour...did lots of camping when i toured Europe...but then i didnt have the resource that i have now...this forum, and the amazing bunch of friendly people that are memberrs of it....

So far i think i have about a zillion places to stay...thanks everyone for such generous offers....

I also have about a zillion roads to check out!

Yeah time & money! I reckon airfares to and from are going to set me back about $4500 to start with! Then there is bike hire, or buying a bike! I would prefer to buy a bike, and then re-sell it when i go home....

When i was in Europe, i was 20 years old, and rode insane Kilometres on some days....can remember a couple of 18 hour days, where i covered 2000km's, and i regularly did 1000km's in a day....i aint much of a tourist, just ask Kazza & Humpy....

A great ride, and great roads, is much more appealing to me, than historical monuments, pretty landscapes, etc....

But i do realise i am no longer 20 years old, and 400-600km days are probably more realistic these days...i averaged 450km's a day on the recent Tassie trip...but given the right bike, and the right route, i am happy to knock off 1000km's in a day...if it is just a "transport" leg....in other words, smashing through the kilometres on long stretches of straight roads!

The night time will be for socialising, and doing lots of people meeting, watching, etc....

I love good food, and i love meeting new people...will talk to anyone, if they stand still long enough near me!

I am IN! There are still 29 states unfilled on my map. I have to agree that California is incredible to ride once you get north of the 101 loop of LA county. Also rode Angeles Crest and found out just how scared of heights I am.

If you are doing Laguna Seca and Indy, your route will take you through STL (St Louis, MO) where I reside. I work at a larger dealership and can set you up with tires and oil etc. I will try to plan some vacation time to do some riding with you.

One hidden gem that is fantastic on a bike is the Ozark mountains of Missouri. If you wanna use googlie to check it out, look south and west of Potosi, MO specifically in the Bixby, MO area.

Bugga! About 2 years too early for me. Want to pay off my house, get set up a bit, and then maybe buy another house in Tassie. Air fares, accom, food, an FZ1, and if I'm there for 2 weeks riding twities I'll destroy 2 sets of BT016's. I reckon it'd be at least a 15 grand trip.

Besides, realistic plan or wild dream, I would like to give myself every chance of getting in a season of super stocks one day (if I'm good enough of course).

Hope it all comes together for you though. Does this mean no Tassie trip next year? :EEK:

Im with ozzieboy on this one Mortgage, kids & hopefully some more racing. I couldn't leave the family & it just wouldn't be the same if I packed em into a Winnebago like last time

No, Tassie is still a goer for next year! Armed with what I learned whilst on this years jaunt, I reckon I can do Tassie a lot more economically! About a $4000 trip...maybe $5000.

So that is definitely still on! The girls are already planning their trip in the car!:rockon:

Did a bit of investigation today, I reckon the states may have to wait to 2013. But is definitely still on!!!

I know this....I will be working my ring to the bone in the next year or so...have plans to buy land and put a house on it too, all at the same time as sorting the American trip out as well!

Have always been a "doer"!!! This dream has been such for a long time now...it will happen! And it will be epic! It was 2 Germans I saw at the Ferry port in Launceston that made me push the go button on this one!!! They were on a 3 year bike trip around the World! What I am planning is lightweight in comparison to such adventures!!!
