Help!!! LCD not working.

So, I bought a wrecked 06' FZ a while back with the intentions of rebuilding it for this riding season. I am currently rebuilding it as a FZN. Here is my issue. The LCD portion of the tach is not working. This is the portion that displays the RPM, Speed, Trip etc. All of the other indicators work and so does the back light. Originally I had thought that the LCD portion of the screen was just out... Pricey Mistake. I have checked the wires going to the guage from where it connects to the frame and they are in moderate condition. What else could be bad for it to not be displaying these things?

I am about ready to hook up a Trail Tech.

Nope, The LCD is flat in all circumstances. I even tried to measure the voltage input to the LCD screen, but it doesn't seem that anything is getting through other than power and the inputs for the "Idiot Lights." However this is relatively difficult to do with only two hands... Perhaps I should somehow incorporate my feet…

Thanks guys, I would go the new speedo route, but I have tried that with a new/used stock speedo and still nothing. And I don't think that I would have two completely dead speedos. Do you guys know of anything else that I could check out?

Or if I do get a completely new Koso how would I hook it up if all the stock wiring is shot?

The best way would be to check with a known good instrument cluster but that is interesting. So you're saying 2 different clusters behave the same? This might lead to the thought that a connector or wire path is abnormal.

With no power on, can you check the continuity of the feed (wire) going to the tach?

Without knowing the circuit or components you will run voltage/current through I wouldn't just test continuity without power I would rather disconnect the wire from both ends and ring out the wire. Where is the output signal to the cluster? Is it from the ECU or direct from a sensor looking at crank RPM?
I'll try to find out through the sometimes limited info in the wiring diagram...

I'm attaching a PDF of 2 pages that will help ID color codes and wiring related to this cluster. Component 34 is the actual instrument readout. Some of the LED's are driven by the cluster and some LED"s are separate from the actual electronics related to the LCD readout cluster. Component #17 is the crank position sensor and I'm going to guess this is a source for the ECU to see rpm as well as timing. It looks like out of process of elimination that there is a yellow wire with a red tracer that is the signal from the ECU to drive the tachometer. This wire may also be used for the speedometer signal because there are no other sources. They may do that using an addressing process but that's for another day Haha! Right now I'm concerned with helping to understand whether this is an internal failure within the instrument cluster or possibly a disruption of the signals from the ECU to the cluster.
I would at this point suggest unhooking the battery, unplugging the instrument cluster, unplugging the ECU and see if that yellow wire with the blue tracer has continuity. Also inspect the plugs for obvious contaminants that would booger a connection.

Edit: Sorry I thought you said just the Tach didn't work....Also, I messed up the upload of the 2 PDF pages. The schematic didn't include the entire diagram...Check fuse #47 and red wire with white tracer.

So the trip counters don't show either? Nor the speedo? What about the temperature gauge, fuel gauge and clock?

Is your battery fully charged?

Wow, Thanks guys. This is really helpfull. See once I noticed that two clusters where not working I assumed it had to be internal. (ECM, Sensor, Wiring) I will check for continuaty this weekend if I can. Have to help my sister move. But that fuse that you proposed my be my first course of action. Thanks Again

None of the LCD displays work. All of the LED lights on the gauge work, including the back light.

If you end up getting a Koso, I can say that they make great gauges. I have one if their tachs on my TW, and the tach has been hammered on and off road, all without a hitch! You can see the little guy here : Koso Tach Installed! - Yamaha TW200 Trailway Discussion Forum

I would recommend looking at all the wiring going to the cluster. Something is corroded/unplugged somewhere. It's probably a case of, if one is unplugged, the whole dang thing fails to work.

Thanks guys for all of your help. I finally got it figured out. I can't believe that I didn't check it before. There was a small nick in the wire that I had to repair, that was in a none noticable location. On top of that the fuse blew, must have happend when the wire got damaged.

The koso gauge looks sweet, but right now I'm just going for rideable. I should get my FZN kit in this week so maybe soon.

Glad to hear you got it fixed! See, more often than not it's always something stupid simple that causes so much grief. lol
