alternator

The stator is just one piece of the alternator pie. Your service manual, as most will, refers to it vaguely as a "generator", or "AC generator". I've found what you're looking for, but let me explain a little history:

Older bikes used a version where the stator acted as the electromagnet, and the rotor contained the field windings. The problem with this is the the windings in the rotors often shorted through heat the the rotational forces they were exposed to, usually burning up the stator and regulator rectifier in the process. Most 80's bikes have this system, although there are many exceptions. For example, the Honda CBF series is pretty famous for its charging system problems due to this system, but I believe that the Kawasaki KZ and Suzuki GS did not. This is what that system looks like:

The stator and cover with slip rings:

And the rotor. Notice how the stator sits AROUND the rotor in this system:

The battery supplies the voltage necessary for magnetism, and the power is transferred along those slip rings to the regulator rectifier, and to the bikes electrical systems.

THIS is the information you are looking for. It can be found on page 2-12 of your 2007 service manual:

Newer bikes (and some older ones) use the opposite of what we just discussed. They use a stationary stator like the other system, but this stator is INSIDE of the ROTOR. The rotor in this system contains powerful permanent magnets, which does not rely on any outside power source to initiate its magnetism. This system is referred to as a magneto. It is a much more reliable system and most often used in applications where you need a constant reliable spark.

hi . first i am new to that forum. 2nd i saw the post is alreay pretty old but i hope some one has a good info.

how can i check if the generartor is still in a good condition? the output that i have is about 13.9 V by 5000 rpm. but it drops? down to 13,1 to 13,3 when i turn on highbeam.
if the fan comes on as well there is not much left and it droped down today to 11.9 - 12.5 V.

i just notes that my batteries is not fully charge after a 1 hr drive. i guess i have to messare resistance , right? when , where ?

thx for an idea

and it is not normal that the V drops below 13.5 V and lower when just the fan and an extra headlight is on, correct?

infos to my bike

TBH that sounds ok to me, but you are talking about the voltage level at the battery or coming off the rectifier/regulator. Output from the stator is 3 phase AC at around 30-90V depending on engine speed.

Welcome to the forum! :welcome:

It does seem a bit low to me.

Please read this thread, especially posts #5 & #10:

The thread is very informative and relates to your issue exactly..

Several members are very experiances in this area and will chime in.

Good luck

thx for the help . yes thats what coms out by the battery . i am going to check some more on the weekend. The big starts it is just so wired that i cant have a secound light on.

(highbeam)

does someone has the some problem light both lights on.

Mine is pretty happy with both on. 3+ year and no issues. Well till you idle in heat (fan on, and both lights). Then a good brisk country ride makes bike and rider proper with the world!
