Teaser, Latest on my Naked Project

As mentioned before, I will not post any pictures of the bike until it is done, however, here is the latest project that I am working on for the Naked Conversion.

2001 R1 Forks: $180 on ebay. I have the brake calipers ($90 ebay) and front wheel spacers ($5 ebay) as well.

Now before anyone decides that you just can't fit a pair of R1 forks on an FZ6 let me share with you that based on all of the research I have done the only problem is the center post on the triple tree. That being said, I have just spent the entire day removing the center post from a used FZ6 triple ($50 ebay) and pressing it into the R1 triple (the R1 triple in the picture is a hybrid with the FZ6 center post installed). The R1 spacers will allow me to use my FZ6 front tire.

I'm thinking it will be in place in 2 weeks or less, I will post front end pictures of the bike when it is in place. Just drilled and tapped my 3 inch, 15 degree risers in preparation for mounting them on the R1 top clamp.

I buy the R1 forks (2003), R1 triple tree (2003), R1 brake caliper (2003) and R1 upper tree (2008)

I identify several problems :
- remove the axle from lower tree
- machining the two steering stop on the lower tree
- install the FZ6 axle on the R1 lower tree
- verify the the steering angle (I hope that this one will be wright, if not,
I thinks machine the upper and lower tree from the AU4G block)
I knows that I don't idenfy all problems

please could you indicate the details of this FZ6 modification,
I am very interresting.

I will attempt to answer your questions.

I buy the R1 forks (2003), R1 triple tree (2003), R1 brake caliper (2003) and R1 upper tree (2008)

I used 2001 R1 forks (1998-2001 are the same, 2002 on use a different axle and 2003 on have a different center post diameter) because they are the same length as the FZ6 Forks, they also use the same wheel axle as the Fz6 with different spacers. I got the R1 spacers at ebay for less than $10.

I am using the 2001 R1 Triple with a used 2007 FZ6 center post pressed in (See picture below). You will need to be sure to remove the retaining ring at the bottom before you press out and in the new triple. Re-install the retaining ring. I am also putting 3", 15 degree risers on the top triple to keep the riding position close to the same as it currently is.

I am using 2002 R1 Front Brake Calipers because they have the gold anodized piston caps instead of the blue from previous years (1998-2003 Front Calipers will all mount on these forks)

I'm not sure what you mean by this, if you are talking about the triple tree center post, then see above. If you are talking about the wheel axle then also see above as the 2003 Forks you are using will use a different axle than the FZ6.

- machining the two steering stop on the lower tree

Yes, I removed the steering stays as they are too narrow to work on the FZ6 frame.

- install the FZ6 axle on the R1 lower tree

Again, confused

- verify the the steering angle (I hope that this one will be wright, if not, I thinks machine the upper and lower tree from the AU4G block)

The steering geometry is not affected as the forks are the same length and I am using the FZ6 Center post in the triple. In addition the rake is in the frame, not the triple, the only way you would change the steering geometry is by moving the triple lower or higher on the forks.

I hope this helps to clarify a little. I am waiting for my new R1 brake pads and another item which will be a surprise, before I swap the forks and post pics. If I run into any additional hurdles I will be sure to post them.

the clearance between the diameter of the center post form FZ6 and the R1 lower tree is 0,30 mm
I think to three solution :
- install an insert on the R1 lower tree
- install a ring on FZ6 center post
or the hard facing of the FZ6 center post by welding and machining this one to the diameter 30.35mm
for me the latest solution is better, but more expensive and more difficult.

what do you think about this ?

Luckily, I did not have this problem with the 2001 R1 Lower Triple as it is the same diameter as the FZ6, the R1 Center Post Diameter changed in 2003. However, I do have this situation with the R1 Top clamp as the top of the FZ6 Center Post is smaller. I will insert a ring to make up the difference at the top.

In your case option 3 sounds like it would work fine since the FZ6 Center Post is steel, you could definitely build up a weld around it and then machine it down to the correct size with a lathe.

Then there is option 4, get a 1998-2001 R1 Lower Triple, it has the same center post diameter as the FZ6 and the same fork clamp diameter as the 2003 forks you have. There are a couple on ebay for less than $100.
