Has anyone tried 'modding the flies' on an FZ6? I know it's poplar on FZ1 models. Would it do the same for an FZ6?

They are the intake valves that sit inside the stacks where the air gets sucked into the engine from the airbox. On FZ1s, a very common mod is to replace the stock ones with slightly smaller ones - allowing better airflow into the engine. It improves midrange response apparently.

I'd like to know more about this. Does it change idleing charachteristics, etc.

TBH I have no idea. Check out the threads about it on the FZ1 forum. Most people who do it really like it "Best mod under $50" etc...

Some mechanics call these butterflies, and my FZ6 has them but I don't think changing them makes a difference since it only takes a twist of the wrist to open them more??????? Making them thinner or sharper edges for less resistance makes more sense to me but it looks like they fit perfect and would mess with the tuning to mod, does power commander have a map for fly modification?

I looked into it more, FZ1 is electronically controlled, does that make any difference? Mine move when I twist the throttle.

by the looks of the fz1 set up they are secondary buterflies the alloy ones in the fz1 move via a servo motor like the exup system and the goldly coloured ones move with the throttle. the ones out fz6sare only the main butterfys and no secondry like the fz1. do not touch the butterflies in your throttlebodies! the only way the mod the throttle bodies on an fz6 is a sync. do not do anything else to them or all you will do is cause trouble

AH HA! no, still doesn't. The "butterflies" shown in his picture are the main throttle bodies not the ecm controlled "flies" which are above the main throttle bodies in the FZ1.
Yeah.... don't touch your throttle bodies unless you are 100% sure you know what you are doing. Taking material off your main butterflies is a recipe for expensive disaster.

Your findings are correct. The FZ6 has one set of butterflys. The FZ1 has two sets, one connected to the throttle and the other set, the sub-throttle plates, are servo activated. And yes, I did this mod but I did the free version. I removed mine, cut them down and reinstalled them. One damned fine mod for free! What a difference in throttle response!

The FZ1, I believe, has two sets of butterflies in the intake tract. Same setup as the GSXRs. The secondaries are used to 'buffer' the rider's input, and keep the intake velocity higher. Higher speed airflow breaks up the fuel droplets better, so the fuel burns more completely for more power.
The secondaries are servo controlled by the ECU.
As far as I know, the FZ6 does not have secondary butterflies.
