Haha! I used to talk to Dave (The Snake) Sabo when he sold guitar picks at some hole in the wall music store in Toms River area. It was just before they started opening for Guns n Roses. Haha! Pretty cool to see people on the verge of their dreams, fingers crossed. I also grew up around the Boss way before he became famous. From the days of The Castiles, Earth, and Steele Mill. Funny to be a kid playing right next to someone like that, going camping together and to see him on TV today with Elvis Costello.

another place i hang out a bit is talkbass. they're big into "clubs" over there so to be funny i started a rachel bolan fan club. i think we have 7 members. anyone, one of the guys posted that growing up he was a good friend of rachel's (real name james) old brother. i can't imagine having known people in that context and then see them on tv. must be a little surreal.

i know it wouldn't be the dream meeting i have in my head... and we'd disagree on so many things in life... but i'd love to meet rachel. not sure there's really any other musicians that i can say that about. i've always looked at them as just like me... only difference is they worked a little harder and happened to be at the right place at the right time. as a result i've never had that idolization thing going on. but i would like to meet rachel. and if SRV was still around i'd love to meet him as well.

i still remember being 12 years old, sitting in my living room and seeing the "youth gone wild" video for the first time. blew me away! metal bassist didn't really make themselves heard in those days. and here he was with this nice little line just before the verses. and then 18 and life came out and he had a nice prominent bass line in that. i was sold. i knew i wanted to play an instrument before that but didn't know what. when i heard that line i knew i wanted to play what he was playing.

funny enough, i took a big skid row break and didn't listen to them for years. recently started listening again and was shocked (sorta) how much my perfect bass tone sounds like his. which i guess isn't that big of a shock seeing as how loving his playing and tone got me into gallien-krueger amps and spector basses.

for those not familiar here is the song that started it all for me. 22-25 seconds in is the little line i'm talking about. oh, and i was so into rachel that i wanted a chain running from my nose to my ear in the worst way. :rockon:

I played trombone from gradeschool thru college jazz band, and played in bar bands from then on to about two years ago. My last band Puddlestone actually played two shows for the 2002 Winter Olympics! :rockon:

I miss playing, but I don't miss tearing down gear at 2 am either. Nonetheless, once I get relocated to Tucson (that'll be another thread when I know for sure) I may get into another band, it's hard to shake it once its in your blood.


EDIT: Oh YEAH, I miss Level 42 so much! Also a huge Dream Theater fan too!

Playing in a rock band is the same as running away from home and joining the circus!

I can play the radio, AND the CD player, AND I can sync my iPod. I can even play a record player...remember those?

I envy you guys and gals. I'd love to be able to play an instrument, but I'm so tone deaf it's not even funny.

Years ago I went out a bought a Gretsch 6120, a sweet little Peavey Classic 30 tube amp and tired for a year. I really tired. I gave up. I sucked.

man do i feel inadequate in this thread.. i love and have a great appreciation for music of all styles, and played trombone, baritone from grade 5-12, jazz, concert, marching. as well as played some tuba (concert) and tried some trumpet but that didn't work so well for me



the wife (knew her back in band also) played/plays, oboe, clarinet, bass clarinet, Barry sax, tenor sax, most any drums/ percussion both marching and concert

so yah she can play most any woodwind and most all percussion and probly some other stuff i cant think of

and we both play some guitar hero now but that is about all.

i have like 50gb and 15,000 mps, does that count?

I used to play a Yamaha Baritone, also called a euphonium. I played for about 6-7 years in middle school and high school band. Mostly played classical music, some ragtime stuff, some marches.
It looked something like this...

I stopped playing because no one wants to hear it unless its in a polka band.

wow. learn something new everyday. i've seen youtube videos and heard the songs but i've never "heard" of him before. just did a little more searching. he is pretty good. i don't have much of an opinion just yet. but thanks for pointing me to more great music. i'll be checking him out a little more in the coming days and get back to you. at this point i know he's good, just don't know how good he is.

Bass player here too. Been playing for about 13 years or so, currently playing with a cover band doing everything from Metallica, Jace Everett, STP etc.

I have a few basses but this one is my favorite at the moment: Traben Tribal Sun; 35" scale (I really enjoy the long and extra long scale lengths)

I think the way you're playing left handed is pretty cool because the guitar is actually being played upside-down.
