New '06 FZ6 Owner

I'm a happy camper. Found a great deal on a used '06 FZ6. Can you believe it only had 350 miles on the odometer when I rode it off the lot? Looks in near mint condition, and after 100 miles I can't be more happy with it.

I'm a year-round rider in South Texas, and, besides the car my wife has, my scooter had been our only other mode of transportation for over a year now. Scooter is listed for sale, and the time log on the FZ6 has begun.

Anyways, glad to be aboard the forum.
 
Welcome! You made a wise choice, well, TWO wise choices...a great bike, and a great forum. :thumbup:
 
I suppose I could start a new thread, but I'll just use this one.

I'm leaving before too long on a 1,200 mile round-trip, which will take me through some slightly remote areas - remote as in 100 miles from the nearest town. First longer distance trip, so a little anxious. Excited, but anxious.

I don't plan on adding any luggage compartments at this time, and will just be using the underseat storage and then my backpack. Besides checking the tires, brakes, and fluids before leaving what should be on my checklist for stuff to pack, and are there any mods that should be done beforehand? I'm thinking maintenance wise here, and not comfort or visual asthetics.

I thought about possibly some spare bulbs and fuses, tire gauge, multi-tool kit, and that's as far as I got. Oh yeah, and maybe a map if I have enough room under there. I also read about hooking up some cables for easier battery charging/jumping on the FZ6, but I may be mistaken on that.

You may want to get a copy of all the Yamaha dealers along the way, just in case you run into something unexpected.
How is your chain and sprockets?
 
like you, I bought a used FZ6 recently, unlike you, I'm stuck in Afghanistan
until spring and can't ride it, when I return, before I go anywhere on it I'm
going to install frame sliders, although your bike has only 350 miles on it,
it may need some maintenance, if you have not already done so I'd dump
the oil, clean, lube and check chain adjustment, and have a good look at the tires,

Guyd-
With only 350 miles that bike sat a looong time. Now would be an excellent time to change all the fluids - coolant, oil (use synthetic) and brake fluid. You can do this yourself or have it serviced. At least this way you start with a clean slate.
 
Maintenance wise.... I'd STRONGLY suggest flushing the brake fluid. That should be on the list as an annual, regardless of if the bike moves at all. 3 years+ is a long overdue change.......

I'll definately change out the fluids sooner rather than later. Before I rode off the lot the oil was changed (synthetic) and the chain was adjusted and lubed. Now I just need to change the brake and coolant fluids - that and anything else that may need done, which nothing comes to mind at the present. I'm still needing to make that list of stuff to stow away under the seat for my trip. Maybe I'll search this forum some when I get a chance. Something is probably out there.

I'll get some pics posted when I get a chance. Probably some Texas Hill Country stuff, and if you're lucky I'll throw in some Mexican food porn!
 
If you want to add another beneficial step in catching up on the maintenance...... I'd suggest flushing out the fork oil as well. It's not high quality to start with, and it tends to age, as well......

Here's one of many links that offers advice on what you should have with you. You decide what might be important and what's not. The list is just a guide or reminder of what might come in handy.

Use the back seat by attaching a duffle bag or small carry on bag with some bungee cords. Enough to store some extra clothes and rain gear.

Congrats on the new (to you) bike.

You're crackin' me up with the "...stow stuff under the seat..." notion. I've got my stock tool kit, registration, and power commander under mine and it's a tight squeeze. Maybe I just don't know how to pack. Anyhow, good luck with that. Luggage or bags on the seat with bungies are probably your best bet if you're just lookin' to get on the road.

I think I saw that someone recommended sliders already. I'd second that. It'd be all you need, to get out on your first trip, with a new bike, loaded down, maybe a little top-heavy... Sliders are cheap compared to paint and plastic.

Here's another thing. I hate to say this but you probably need a new battery.

I bought an 06 last year with low miles just like you did.
It was like the 2nd time I took my bike out for a ride and my friend and I stopped in a parking lot. I left the bike on for 10 minutes with the engine shut off. This killed my battery. I couldn't turn my bike back on.

Fortunately I was close to my house so I was able to get my car and jump start my bike (car off, of course). Actually, my first intro to this forum was through desperately googling what to do using my friend's Iphone while in the parking lot. :thumbup: Yeah that sucked. Having a battery underneath the fuel tank made things suck even more (although it's good for the weight distribution.)

I'm just throwing this out there so you don't have to suffer like I did. :D

OTD was $4,200. I think the sales price was $3,750 if I remember correctly. I know it's already 4 years old, but with only 350 miles I felt like I couldn't pass it up. Plus I like the looks of it and how it rides, which is the main thing. That was also after they adjusted/lubed the chain and replaced the oil. Small things, but it was nice to have done nonetheless.

I made an appointment to take it in tomorrow. I'm getting the coolant and brake fluids replaced, battery replaced, have them double check the chain, and do a quick inspection of the lines and cables. I may also have them adjust the rear spring for me. It's set at 3, and I'm not sure if it will need it or not. I'm 165 lbs., but my wife (145):spank: rides with me often. Not sure what they will suggest. I haven't noticed it riding funny, but I don't really have anything to compare it with. I guess they will tell me if I should have them change it or not.

I may get that tank bag. I always have my backpack with me, and so I've typically used it the past couple of years. I'll just have to wait and see what my needs are. Oh yeah, ordered me a set of Shogun sliders. Should be in early next week.
