I installed a 15 Tooth front sprocket and its way more fun to ride now. I might have lost 10-12 MPH on top speed but I rarely go 145
 
It's probably a good thing that you don't go 140 regularly ;)

Take-offs and getting up to speed are much quicker now, no? Best bang for the buck performance mod on this bike you can make IMHO - $30 max!
 
Agreed... can't believe more people don't do this mod. As said, the best of any mod I have done and the cheapest!! I didn't even have a noticeable drop in fuel usage.
 
He lost a bit of speed in each gear, including top gear... it has nothing to do with whether or not he will ever redline it in 6th gear... it's just a scientific fact that for any given RPM, you will be going a bit slower compared to the stock gearing.

Duuuuude, we've been over this. :spank: Theoretical top speed does not equate to actual top speed (which will be less because of wind resistance etc.). If you can't redline in 6th (i.e., the bike still has more theoretical speed but the engine can't get you there) then you didn't lose any actual top speed, you only lost make-believe-theoretical-wavex top speed. :thumbup:

If you changed your gearing to 17/46, you wouldn't "lose accel but gain top speed" because you're never going to redline 6th with the stock 16/46 so adding more theoretical top speed isn't going to get you down the road faster...you still have the same engine etc.

If the bike won't top out the current gearing, then you can keep getting more agressive with the gearing without losing top speed until you get to the point that you are able to redline 6th....and then you'll start losing top speed.

Let me ask you a question, we go to the Salt Lake flats, and we have 2 identical FZ6s, one with a -1 sprocket and the other with a +1 sprocket,, both bikes have an identically calibrated speedohealer and the 2 riders with the same weight, now you have them both go for 10 minutes in a straight line... which one will see the highest # on his speedo?

Speed = (rpm X rear tire circumference X front sprocket) / (primary gear ratio X sixth gear ratio X rear sprocket X 1056)

Here is a neat spreadsheet... theoretically, top speed of the FZ6 with stock ratio is 171MPH... only 160MPH with -1 front sprocket. Now this is at 14000 redline, and I understand what you're saying Nate, but short of doing all kinds of calculations (would need power data for any given RPM), it isn't clear to me what you would actually see in reality in top of 6th...

Assuming both speedos were 100% accurate, I'm guessing you'd see the same number, or the one with the 15T would be higher. :eek: But that also assumes you can't redline in 6th w/ 15/46 which I'm not positive about b/c I've never done it.

We'll have to debate this in person over a few beers...it will be more fun that way. :thumbup:

I've read that article...and you just proved my point! :thumbup:

The bike won't do 160...it just won't....so you have not lost top end!
 
But but but... Ive read somewhere that 13.5k rpm is about the max you can get to in 6th gear... so if 13.5k is 155mph with stock gearing, 13.5k with -1 front sprocket will be lower than 155mph... do you agree? There is no debating that...

What you are debating is the fact that you may be able to get more RPM than 13.5k in 6th with -1 front sprocket assuming the -1 front sprocket would put you closer to the torque peak at a given speed close to top speed, but that's not the case! Torque peak on the FZ is around 10k-11k rpm, and it goes down after that... and you'd be passed that point in both scenarios (stock gearing vs -1 in front) anyway, so unless I am missing something, I still maintain that top speed will be negatively impacted by going -1 in front...

But yeah, let's talk about it over a beer @ Xmas (I'll email you back asap on that btw :)).

So between -1 and +1 front sprocket you're guessing top speed would be the same??

What about between -1/+2 and +1/-2? Same top speed too? :BLAA: no way!!!

We're both guessing here, but short of confirming the exact top speed numbers which I believe we all could care less about, the bottom line is simple: -1 in front means that you will be going SLOWER than stock for any given RPM (but you will reach that speed faster).... I think we all agree on that.
 
Hmm.. Sweet, does anyone know the new 0-60 after this mod? What is typical rpm at 70 mph?

Not sure on the answer to either of your questions but if most of your riding is NOT on the highway, you can't go wrong with this mod. The only catch is that speedo/odo will get messed up.

I bought the speedohealer for $100 but I think my odo is now off slightly...still pretty accurate though.
