I'm good, thanks for asking. :)

Sprained wrist/elbow, pulled muscles, all in my left forearm. Scraped up knee.

Following a friend who drives too fast at times, would have been fine if I knew where he was going. he turned where I didn't expect him to. I braked a bit harder than I should have to make the turn, slid the rear end out. I think I hit a small spot of oil in the road to start the slide but not sure. Stayed on the rear break like we are supposed to but it grabbed traction and tossed me over. Probably doing 15 MPH by the time it tossed me. coming down from @ 35/40.

Jacket was / is Joe Rocket mesh. Slid maybe 3 feet on it. Not a lot. I'm convinced that the shoulder pad saved my shoulder. mesh looks untouched. Helmet took a bit of a wack. Gloves as well. All in all I'm good. The gear took the brunt of it. Only 'rash' is a bit on my leg the size of a half dollar.

No accident is a good accident but all things considered I'm pretty happy with this one. Most riders go down at sometime. I've been riding for 5 years now and this is my first other than dropping a bike at a stop in the first few weeks of riding. I was lucky after being stupid and thanks to gear I came out ok. In an odd way it was interesting to experience. In the extended time that seems to happen in this kind of event, I was taking notes in my head. I was really impressed when my head hit the pavement. Shoulder came down, Felt the pad compress, head came down with a wack but I didn't feel a thing. not even a ring of my bell.

The bike needs plastic, a foot peg, handle bars and a new clutch lever. Red 2006 if anyone is selling their plastic after going naked. :)

buy a new helmet. that one is toast.

good to hear you are ok.

crashing when you walk away is actually pretty fun and awesome in its own way.

ive done it three times now!!!

:tard:

Holy cow! Glad to hear you are ok and that the gear worked great.

And, I agree with lonesoldier - it is time for a new helmet.

Thanks guys.

There is no question that I'll be getting a new helmet. Probabaly replace the jacket as well unless I just get new pads in the shoulder/ elbow. The mesh jackets are cheep enough just to replace it. I've got 3 years out of it. Off to Walgreens to buy a sling.

May I suggest you that never use the rear brake?

I use it just under 10 km/h.

Amen to that! How many crashes or near crashes have we heard of on this forum due to rear brake use. I know some say practice practice but in the real world under changing conditions the rear will get you into trouble fast.

The hardest part for me is when I have been on my KLR or FJR where I do use the rear is to remember not to use the rear on the FZ. JHMO

glad to hear you're ok after a fall like that :)
i've got some blue plastics if you have any desire to try mixing the colors.

Thanks but I'm going to try to keep her one color. :) I'd like to go black if I do a color change but I have to look into the cost and feasibility. :)

i agree i never use the back brake. i will gently use it with the front to keep pads even but i grab the front. espicially in a turn (to many years racing motocross lol). you can feel when you have to much on the front and ease where you need it. backs are just dangerous. and also make sure to get a new hlemet. when i totalled my FZR6 i shattered my Zeus helmets faceplate but helmet looked good. when i pulled the cushion and looked inside the jaw piece on both side had sider cracks all through it. now it sits on my shelf and mocks me that i didnt watch for the idiot pulling out in front of me lol.

Eeks. Glad you are okay.

I too try not to use the rear brake much on the street. Learned that from doing a bunch of track days. Almost every time I'm come close to getting in trouble on the street it was due to the back wheel locking up from the brake.... I do use the rear brake if I'm off-road in real slippery stuff (like after running wide on the race track and ending up in the grass.) Using the front in the really slick stuff will drop you quickly.

I due tend to use the rear brake when going very slowly, as it helps to balance the bike a lot. Those "ride like a pro/police officer" videos show how they do all of that stuff by balancing the rear brake with the motor, by modulating the clutch. It really works.

Anyone ever cross-section their helmet after a crash? I think it would be neat to take a bandsaw/hacksaw down the center of the helmet to see how the inner foam has compressed.

Just wondering if you were wearing riding pants or levis.

Levis. Yea, I know. We all should be wearing Kevlar jeans at the minimum and they are 'on the list'.

My jeans were not damaged though. The rash must have been caused by the jeans when the bike came down on my leg. It is on the inside of my knee.

I'm glad to hear you are more or less okay Goat. Highsides really suck, the landing is the worst part, ouch. Get better quick and get back on the bike.

Now here we go on the no rear brake thing again. Haven't we beaten that horse into dog food yet?

For those of you to don't use your rear brake because the "crash troll" will grab your ankle, go enroll in a riders class and learn to use it. I remember back in the day, "Whatever you do boy don't even touch your front brake, you'll flip right over the bars."

So what the F am I supposed to use? My feet and Fred Flintstone it???

Really now...

Glad to hear you're not hurt and your bike is relatively ok man!

I have a question:

I'm a total noob who just took the MSF and I'm a little confused. The instructors spent 2 days teaching us how essential it is to use both brakes and now everyone in here has reached a general consensus that rear brakes are a no-no for the street. So as an absolute total noob, who should I listen to?
