As I'm not too active on the loosing weight thread at the moment so I thought I would post this one, FOOD! here you can post anything to do with food, likes, dislikes, tips, nice local dishes or simply strange ones.
Being a Brit I do like my cooked breakfasts and roast dinners even though they are unhealthy, unfortunately my wife doesn't, so I simply wait till I'm back in England to eat them.
Typically Dutch foods: Well the Dutch eats lots of dairy products, cheese (my favourite is cheese with cumin seeds added) , milk (generally skimmed), buttermilk (uuurg), plain yogurt & Cold custard (Vla), (both sold in milk sized cartons).
Erwten soep thick Pea soup with smoked sausage.
Stampot this is basically potatoes, carrot and onion which has all been cooked together and coarsly mashed, generally served with smoked sausage or a pork chop and gravy. Boerenkool is potatoes and curly Kale once again mashed together. Haring is raw herring served with finely chopped onions, this comes in 2 forms, firstly neatly chopped into chunks and served on a ****tail stick or simply with head scales and innards removed, you simply grab the tail and lower it into your mouth chomping as you go. I must admit I do like this dish and so does my brother only he refers to it as harang when he has to eat it with tail still on.
Chickory and andives are eaten here as veg quite a lot too.
The Dutch have pretty much adopted Indonesian food as their national dish, it's pretty much like chinese food with a few different dishes as well, for example "Babi Pangang" which is basically a chunk of roast pork with a spicy sauce on it (Mmmm). Satay (peanut & garlic sauce) is also very popular here, normally served on top of a large ****tail stick of pork or chicken.
My favourite food is Indian but I love so many others. I really loved the dishes served in and around N'awlins, I love fish and shell fish and I like a bit of spice so the Cajun/Creole mix was simply heavenly.
Well I can go on all night but now it's your turn.......
