R6 fork mod problem

One of these things is not like the other:

The seller of course didn't mention this when I asked about the condition. The good news is I am missing a bolt to do the mod so it has to wait anyway. New date mgiht be July 11th.


The questions is what do I do? I figure I have 3 options:

1. Zip tie or fabricate
2. Buy another left fork
3. Buy another left fork tube

Any ideas for #1?

Will it be an issue to use two forks with different mileage? If I get another fork tube how difficult is it to switch out?

I'd get your money back for them lying to you about the condition. That is obviously something they should have mentioned to you. Other than that, you might be able to take it so someone and have a new tab fabbed up and welded on, but I don't know.

I would do the exact same thing, in that order.

Edit:

After close inspection of the box it appears that the fork was damaged during shipping. I have contacted the seller to find out if it was insured. I was also able to find the broken tab under one of the box flaps and am looking at estimates for welds.

grind down the other tab and make them both smooth

i dont even use those tabs for my brake lines

Are you sure you have the same forks?
The brake line mount is that squared third tab BEHIND the forks.
The one in the front, the broken one, is used to mount the fender.

Maybe your fender is wrong because an '02 fender doesn't belong on 03-04 forks.

If you do weld that, keep in mind, that is a critical bore and heat could warp that area.

Is there enough of that tab left that you could fabricate a new tab and mount it with two very small machine screws? If it is a low stress mount this might be an alternative.

that's a GREAT idea, esp. since he found the broken off tab. I'd look into that even if the carrier's ins. pays up!

BTW, welding would be very risky. I wouldn't recommend it due to such high tolerances on the inner bore..

I looked into welding yesterday and it just isn't worth it. A skilled shop wants $60 because it is aluminum and it is so small. A lower quality shop won't be much less and I'm afraid a freebie may do more harm than good. I tried some super strength loctite epoxy and we will see how that holds. As others have mentioned it is not a critical piece its just me being picky about the way it looks.

Also contacted the seller and he did insure the forks so we are going to work out something price was. He was nice enough to offer a full discount but I decided I am going to use the forks. I got everything I need for the mod for $175 and the parts only have 3.5k on them.

I will update once I finish the mod.

are you sure it was broken DURING shipping? did you notice the box damaged before opening it? that is not an insiginificant amount of force to break that tab off...the box should have been pretty badly damaged I would think

Another possibility is the box is hardly damaged and they were just not packed tightly. Being tossed around a UPS truck and shipping center, they could have easily hit each other in the box and snapped without any damage to the box at all. At that point, if the box is not heavily damaged, UPS would blame whomever packed it and refuse to pay. Where I work, this has happened on SEVERAL occasions. :Flash:
