I use the left foot down right brake most of the time, other times its both feet.
It depends on a lot of things though. Is the pavement all rutted from big trucks sitting? Is there anybody dead up on my ass? Is it a stop and go, or a stop and wait?

Its just a judgement call as to what feels right at the time.
One thing I do is conciously countersteer as I come to stop if I am left footing it, to lean the bike onto my foot as it stops. It helps alot.

I actually balance through most lights.... if it is a real long one ... I start with the left down (bike in gear) I do not fully relax until the cage behind me is stopped at a safe distance.

If I am all OK I put it in neutral....

then if I am going to "get it" I start with thr right foot down and left foot ready to catch second...

otherwise just ease off with the right foot

So to my friends across the pond. Are you taught this technique in your MSF course or something similar?

Both feet!

I'm not familiar with the "cover rear brake" advice....care to explain the benefits?

They also teach you to hold the bike with the foot brake on a hill but I have never understood that either. I too use both feet. I understand this from having a 35 inch inseam.

Although I now put my left foot down, leaving my right foot on or covering the brake at a stop, this was a new skill to be learned when I returned to bikes earlier last year. The last bikes I had ridden were Triumphs and BSA's, with the shifter on the right and the brake pedal on the left. Hence, I had to learn to reverse my foot positions at a stop, which was FAR more difficult than I expected. It took about a month before it became second nature, but even for a month or two after that, I was once in a while hitting the shifter during a stop instead of the brake pedal.
I can't put both feet on the ground properly at a stop because of my (almost) 30" inseam. Just tippy-toes. :D

Left down, yes was drummed into at training, but feels real dicky having to swap and swap back sitting at lights to drop into 1st.

Short arse

I can't get both feet on the floor at the same time. Due to the fact the FZ6 appears to be unusually tall:confused: Or I am vertically challenged. The latter applies here:Sport:

i am going to have to teach myself this covering of the rear brake. here in florida we dont have what you call "hills" our highest point is a pile of trash in a landfill called mt. trashmore! but i do flash my brake light as cages pull up behind. I usually put both feet down and no hand on bars for a light i cant balance through.

No, you're quite a normal size. Same as me. It infuriates me that bike manufacturers appear to be oblivious of the British Standard Size of 5'8".
That's the thanks we get for bringing proper civilization to the old and new worlds.
The only time I put both feet on the ground at the same time is when I need to back up the bike. I have to hold up the footrests to do this. It makes my son laugh and call me Yoda.

The average Brittish person is 5'8"? I would be considered tall over there if so at 5'10"

Dear Yoda,
You are UK avaerage, unfortunatley you dwarf me by a massive 2". I am 5'6" and a bit. lol.

I am 5'7", and when I was twenty years old (in the early 1970s) the average height of an American male was right at 5'7". Ten years ago it was 5'9" and I am guessing that it is now probably 5'10". I can put both feet down while on the FZ6 except I am on my toes (balls of my feet). I can't put them down at the same time and be flat footed.

Ah nutrition the biggest link to growth, I blame my parents lol I was a two month pre to. I am skimming the tarmack (pavement) if I try to use both feet.

Yeah, I blame my dads side of the family for my butt being built so low to the ground. My son is only 16 and he is already 5' 10". He has either inherited his height from his mothers side (her dad and brothers are all 6'), or I need to have a DNA test on him!!!!! I think I will have a talk with his momma!:justkidding:

Hey now. LOL
I am 5'8" but I have a 32" inseam. Short body, and long legs. I guess that makes me a freak. LOL

My wife is just the opposite. She has a long body and short legs. Standing I am an inch taller than her. Sitting she is an inch taller than me. She is Cajun, must be from all that inbreeding her relatives did in the swamps!! LOL

The solution for the vertically challenged is to add on say 80 more pounds to your normal body weight so when you sit on the bike you are compressing the rear suspension enough to touch the ground with both feet flat! :D
Yes, I noticed that when I had a passenger I had no problems reaching the ground.

When stopping while pointing up a steep hill, the front brake won't do the job as the front wheel starts to slide. Happened to me in a parking lot, and I'd stopped to let my passenger climb off. This on a BMW K75RT, not a lightweight bike. I didn't drop it, barely.
