First of all, thanks for all the great comments.

FWIW, I was NOT practicing stoppies. Popping up the rear at the end of a hard stop is not really a stoppy IMO.

The combination of my R6 forks, rearsets, and tendency to be forward and up against the tank 85% of the time means my rear wheel lifts pretty easily. Unless you all suggest I thrust my weight back prior to getting ont he brakes hard, I'm not sure how to adress this on my FZ6. Actually, I'm not sure that would help either as I mentioned earlier that in one particular real emergency situation my rear came off the ground while carrying a passenger and loaded topcase. I actually instinctively modulated the front brake when I felt the rear come up and probably should not have as I hit the object I was stopping for at under 5MPH...down from somewhere between 45 and 60 and a fistful of throttle in second gear. The situation was avoidable so I get a FAIL for that one.

Earlier the same day I made the posted video I actually had an emergency. Car ran a stop sign but I saw it in time and got on the brakes hard. I used both brakes (I use the rear A LOT in the city but not much elsewhere) and the rear locked about a 1/3 into my stop. The rear stayed on the ground the entire time because I was unable to apply maximum front braking pressue due to the super smooth city pavement, residue on the road, and the paint lines I was crossing. This was an assesment that required NO thought. I stopped with my front tire just past the the bad side of the cross-walk and with my heart beating like crazy.

I'm very undecided on how to best employ my FZ6's rear brake....city, country, or track.

No, just a habit from my other bike. The light-hard-light squeeze is to keep the front from diving too deep into the travel. If you go too far at once you lose the fork's ability to react to surface changes.
If you hit the brakes hard you bottom out the fork (or close to it), then if there are any surface irregularities the already compressed fork will have no other option than to skip over the surface of the bumps. This costs you a good amount of distance.
But, if you squeeze progressively the fork has plenty of travel left to compress and rebound safely and keep the tire planted, keeping constant friction and slowing you down faster.

Squeezing progressively but fast, I certainly get. But modulating as you described at the beginning of your paragraph does not make sense to me. My forks are set up for agressive use.

I can see why, but if I'm going 55 and a car decides to make the biker-killer left, I want to know the distance it takes me to stop. If I can't stop in time, I need to look for options.

No, I ride in the natural FZ6 comfortable position. But when I brake, either for a turn or emergency, I shift weight back and grip the tank with my knees. I also sit up straighter to increase wind resistance. It seems to help, even if it's only a mental thing.

So your first reaction to an emergency that is going to require braking is to shift your weight? And you shift your weight back for turns?

For me, I just don't focus on stopping the quickest. I brake hard as I can for the situation and then look to avoid what's in front of me. All the times I've been cut off or the weather was bad and I had to stop fast but the road conditions didn't allow it, I didn't come to a complete stop. I braked hard and scrubbed as much speed as I could while at the same time planned my escape route. That way you don't freeze up.

I think for new riders to the street it's important to be 100% aware of everything around you and plan for the worst vs point fixation and stopping the shortest.

I was the object spoken of above. The situation could of easily resulted in one or all three of us missing legs, or horribly injured. I think you did a awesome job man. I just had a few more milliseconds to see the truck turning and stopped right in front of you. With the very small amount of damage that happened I call it a tradgedy avoided by practicing the skills you showed in the video

My bike was settling back on the rear from being unloaded, right as yours hit and unloaded your front fork and settled back on to the rear.

I am as much responsible for that crash as you are. Mainly the whole thing was set up by a lady waving us by for her husband to turn in front of us. If I hadnt stared at the truck and looked up to check you too, I wouldnt of been there when you got there. It was only just a couple of feet needed.

No more track days for you. Now you gotta get a scooter or those training wheel things.
 
On a serious note, thanks for the post, it reminded me that I need to find an empty parking lot and practice this as well as some slow-speed maneuvers :thumbup:.

Oh, I don't touch the rear brake on the track unless the front fails, done that...Street I use both all of the time.

I think we're saying the same thing. Just making sure the forks don't bottom out, that's when you lost the ability of the fork to react to irregular pavement.

Well, kind of. Under straight-line braking I definitely shift to the rear. I have the TCP seat cowl, which really helps me find the "sweet-spot" for weight transfer under heavy braking.
I very rarely brake into a turn.
My usual procedure:
Brake hard in a straight line (weight shifted to the rear)
Flick at a predetermined turn-in point (weight shifted to the inside of the turn).

Honestly, who am I to tell you how to ride? I know you are a better rider than I am.:rockon:

What kind of speeds does everyone practice from? What other methods are used? I want to add a element of surprise but am not sure how to.

I have a friend;) who likes to practice from around 170km/h...just over 100mile/h. He;) likes to do it in the same few spots, with good vis...etc...etc.

He;) likes to do it over white arrows etc to get the feel of a varying surface, and likes to get the front to the modulating lockup stage and then ease of a smidge. He also likes to change his position in his lane sometimes too (like he's avoiding stuff at the same time)

Sometimes this guy;) likes to leave it 'til the last instant (judging how far it takes to reach the required speed before turning off.) If he misjudges he can always continue on straight.

Sometimes he likes to see how fast he can stop on a bend as well.

It's one of those things that's hard to practice 'cause it's not the real thing, but if you do it often enough, you become pretty confident on how much and how and this will be closer to autopilot allowing you some attention to spare for other things(seeking an escape route from the tailgater behind you for instance).

Also find it doesn't hurt to try it in light gravel too. I reckon it's a need to know thing.

As part of the new module 1 test (UK only), the rider is required to perform an emergency stop. The examiner will fail you if you:

a) lock the rear wheel, or
b) lift the rear wheel, or
c) do NOT show substantial front suspension travel (compression)
d) go under 50 Km/h (32 Mph) prior to braking

It's a bit like the car test, only most cars these days have ABS as standard, so it's much harder to lock the wheels.

Ergo, if you fail any part of module 1, you wont be allowed to move on to module 2 (the road test), so I made sure I practiced all the module 1 parts over and over... and it still took 3 attempts to pass.

I deliberately bought a bike with ABS, but hopefully I wont have to revert to using it.

Wow! I think i need to practise that. I am kinda weary cause i dont want to dump the bike tho. Maybe i'll get some frame sliders on it before i start trying that extreme
