What about HID headlights?!

So, i'm new to the riding world, and hearby new to this forum.

I bought a 2007 Red FZ6 about 3 weeks ago and am loving it. I have several things done already, some things in the mail, and more yet to come. One thing i was curious about becasue i havn't seen anyone mention it on here was about HID head lights. I actually have a H4 & H7 kit with 8000K lights in the mail on their way to me. Just wondering if anyone else has installed HID's on their bike.

I fell in love with the things a couple months ago when i put them into my Jeep, and getting used to them in that and now having regular ole halogens on my new toy just doesn't cut it.

So what do ya'll think...HIDs?

it was a package on ebay, includes the proper h4 and h7 bulbs and slim "ballast" modules or whatever they are. total shipped was $135. Was a little more than my $90 i spent on my jeep, but this kit has the corect bulb sizes, versus buying two kits and only using one bulb from each.

Really, becasue there are actually a few threads on HID and HID conversions for the FZ6.

this is the link of the kit i bought. its just the bulbs alone, should connect right into the factory headlight fixtures on the FZ. I suppose anyway.

i will post in a couple days how it came out as they should be in tomorrow or tuesday.

Yes, please let us know how they look installed. Do you still get as much HID effect using the headlight's reflector vs. installing a projector? Is the 8k color too blue???

If anyone is looking for HID lighting, this is the best place I've found. Forget fleabay, you end up with so-so quality and inexistent support, not to mention warranty issues. $125 for a dual HID kit: DDM 35W & 55W One Hi/Lo and One Fixed Bulb Motorcycle HID System: DDM Tuning - HID Kits, HID Bulbs, DEPO Lighting, BMW and Porsche Performance Accessories

More importantly, you don't really need 2 HID bulbs. If you do the low-beam only, it's the perfect amount of light. Try not to go higher than 5000K color or you're just getting blue light without visibility. I opted for 4500K and it's the closest to real daylight. For the single kit it's $56 SHIPPED, you cannot beat that and the quality is all there. BlaH! I received the H4 and H7 bulb combo and had it installed for about 5 days, maybe. lol. The light output, is quite amazing. Brighter than the 1000k that i have in my jeep. BUT, the stock reflectors caused huge 'hot' and 'cold' spots in the lights output.



This, i did not like. So immediately i started rolling the ball on the FX45 projector conversion that is seen here http://www.600riders.com/forum/fz6-mods/15238-bi-xenon-projector-retrofit-write-up.html..

I followed this setup almost exactly and installed whiter 6000k bulbs. Just like his pics show, the out put is pretty much perfect. High and low beam. There are almost no hot or cold spots in the light output.

as for what the fella above me said, i guess it would work to just have one hid. he IS right, it is plenty of light....but that would look goofy as heck, lol. besides the high beam hid is what makes any of these set ups worth while. i mean, if you are riding with only your low beam on, then you are most likely in town, or in traffic where odds are, there is plenty of outside light not to need the HID output. the sticks is where Dual HIDs really come in handy. not down main street with low beam only. Just my opinion of course.


by the way, the pics below are both of low beam only. you can see the differences quite well between stock reflectors and projectors, and also between 8000K and 6000k respectively. I would have to say that 4-6000K is the way to go, and definately throw in the extra few for the projectors. its just a few hours of easy work, and the payoff is like night and day.

DDMTuning is what I am hearing the most. I am ordering mine there - dual H4 Bi-xenon for the FZ1 ofcourse - $153 shipped. Lifetime warranty and member recommendations at many forums is the selling point. IMO 35w 4500K should be enough.

your right. they should be enough...one thing you should think about though. the H4 socket is bigger than the H7. so some modification would have to be made to either the expensive bulb, or the expensive headlight housing to get the H4 to go in the factory low beam hole. make sense...? and not only that, but the H4 "filiment" is at a different focusing angle than that of the H& so you will not have very good output from the H4 that is in the H7s place...I know this from experience from before my HIDs, as do many others on the forums. it lights up, yeah, but not much light gets on the road...a waste when referenced to being a HID bulb...thats my, and others, experience and 2 cents on dual H4s in our bikes...

I have both the 4000k and 6000k. I ran all sorts of combos, 4000 in my hi, 6000 in low and vice versa, and found that I like the output from the 6000k the most, so thats what I run...maybe if I get some energy I'll take some comparo-shots

Its not $400+....you can get a pair of projectors for about $125 shipped on ebay, after that, you can just buy the D2S hid kit with D2S type bulbs for as low as $65. Yes its a cheaper kit (not a $300 german kit) but its still great none the less. My Cost:

Projectors: 125
Bulbs: 25
Wire adapters for bulbs:15
Ballasts from previous hid kit: ~60
Aluminum: 10
Black paint:2

Total:237

That was my total, if you got the projectors and the ~75$ kit your looking at about 210$

Not bad at all. I would definately check that out before you mad the mistake i did and put HIDs in stock reflectors, that was a waste of 135 on my part.

and the time to do the whole mod only takes a few hours, a jigsaw, heatgun/oven, and some small tinkering skills....not very bad job at all. so the downtime will really only be about an afternoon. i actually did the install twice because the first time, my adjustment screw nut things on the plate stripped out, so i completely redid the install the next day, start to finish.

Thanks barijack, I took your advice and went for the projectors (FX35 - $103 shipped) with a set of G35 ballasts/igniters/bulbs ($104 shipped), bith from eBay. I just need to get some aluminum and a couple of relays and I can join the club.

BTW, I think I'm also gonna place some LED podlights whilst I have the headlight off ...
