Remember to split between the lanes of traffic not on either side. I find many Ca. drivers actually move over so we can lane split.
As much as many of us like to bash the cagers I find most Ca drivers (up here in the mountains) will move over to let bikes pass them. Any other state it just doesn't happen, seems to be more of a "I'm in front of you so tough sh*t, I ain't movin' for nobody"

That is very true, 99% of the time they pull over for me, and sometimes on the street they'll move over so I can get though.
But there are some that are just bitter ***holes and they would be that way with a car or not.

+1 on both points. It's amazing how far some people move over to let you know they see you and that it's okay to get by. Especially people who know they are driving wide vehicles like work trucks. Be sure to thank them with a thumbs up so that they continue to do this!!!

It still can be a white knuckle affair after a few miles of splitting.

Lucky for me I only have to lane split when I ride down off the hill toward Sacramento and the Gray Area. That isn't very often I can assure you.

What's worse is when I am out of state on my FJR and can't lane split. Like taking candy from a baby.

These are good lanes to split because the cagers in the very left lanes often favor the left side staddling that solid yellow line as they are trying to see what's up ahead, Leaving a tad bit more room for you to split.

I just got a ticket for $203 in San Diego for what I thought what lane splitting.

At a traffic light I went around traffic on the right hand side (between the right hand lane and between a bunch of parallel parked cars). the cop said I couldn't do that because there was no lane. Had there been a lane it would have been okay. In other words had I passed the cars at the light on the other side (between the two lanes of traffic) he wouldn't have pulled me over. I never thought about it before but after I got the ticket I realized that it wasn't a safe thing to do since the cars at the light could have taken a right hand turn on red and plowed over me as I was passing. (The light was red)

Or worse still, had a door opened suddenly in your path or right on/into you - most people, regardless of whether they're a passenger or the driver, don't bother looking before they open their doors.
