urgent problem. with pictures.

im in my garage. what i thought was going to be a 45 minute job max has turned into much more than that.

i am following this guide:

and have progressed as far as trying to remove the oil filter.

it is now well past dark and im in my garage with the door shut but it being like 30 degrees celcius below zero.

here is the oil filter wrench i went out and bought:



and it just slides over the oil filter on the bike, but the oil filter i am waiting to replace it with it grabs snugly.

i dont get it. i am twisting counter clockwise. is it reverse or something for oil filters? is there some trick?

Use a screwdriver mate.It was the only way I could get mine off after an hour of trying !

I,m going with a K&N next time.

god damn. now the sides of the filter are dented in and i still cant get it off. ok. i give up. what is the screwdriver method exactly? heard it mentioned not sure what it is.

before i try that tho, is it ok to leave the bike overnight with no oil in it in sub-zero temperature inside the garage?

Grab a hammer and a screw driver. Literally hammer the screw driver THROUGH the filter until it pierces the other side. Use the screw driver as leverage to turn the filter. Turn 90 degrees, repeat hammer method to create second set of holes. Turn 90 degree intervals until loose.

I wouldn't have recommended that wrench, but now that you have it, as shown in your picture, flip the wrench in your hand so the longer leg is on the left side of the filter. I suspect in a CCW rotation the wrench will grab better. Try that!

Are you north side or south side cause if you're north near me, I can pop over for a look.

You need a screwdrived and a hammer. Beat the screwdriver through the oil filter from the side. It needs to go in one side and out the other. Now use the screwdriver to twist it off.

holy hell i just got it off. wow. took forrrrrever. on to next step. i hope putting a filter back on isnt as hard as getting this one off was.

bd thanks for offer mate u are the man. but i finally got it off only a matter of putting new one on now. wow. and ya i flipped wrench around made it a lot easier. jeez.

edit: im south, so it is all good. getting late and i imagine u have work in morning. besides the tough part seems over. bloody thing just wouldnt come off.

um, noobish question:

seating the O-ring in the new filter:

just pop it in the middle or is there more to it then that?

Yeah, just push the O-Ring in. Make sure you give it a smear of oil before attaching it to the motor, it stops the ring from grabbing on the motor and twisting/buckling.

I do work in the morning. Don't use the wrench to put the new one on or the next time you will be doing the screwdriver thing. Hand tight is good, screw the new one on by hand, when you feel it touch the seat, add another 1/2 to 3/4 turn by hand. That's it, unless you have a torque wrench.

Get one the right size and it makes it so much easier. Or... go the K&N route, they come with a nut there already.

O-ring: seat it in the filter or on the area on the bike where the filter will be going. filter doesnt seem to want to screw in now at all. I have placed O-ring in centre of the filter.

still nothing. i have o ring in middle of filter with coat of fresh oil. when i try to screw the new filter back in it doesnt catch anything. i will take picture to show what i mean. one sec.

There is az grove on the filter that the ring sets in. Once in it should't even come out on its own.

Seat it on the filter, wipe a little motor oil on it, and spin the filter onto the shaft. Contact, plus a half+ turn as noted until snug.

This is quite a dramatic oil change!!!

LOL. Everyone has a first time: not sure how to put on the rubber bit, how to use proper lubrication, how to get it in there correctly, but it gets easier in time....wait, what are we talking about here?
