I use this. Way better IMO.

You'll be able to get the filter on. Sometimes you just have to line it up just right and sometimes it spins on easily. I guess it depends on how they cut the threads on the filter.

i just noticed there is no o-ring on the old filter the way i have placed the o-ring into the new filter:

since thats not a square cut seal it would be easier if you put it in dry and then lube the top before you put it on. That way the friction will keep the gasket on the filter and not slip out.

Threads will not engage if you are trying to put the filter on crooked. It must be plane to the seat for it to spin on. If you're doing it in the dark, get some light, take a breath and patience. It's easy to not start it right and if a cross thread occurs, you're going to be in a mess of trouble.

The o-ring should just seat in the groove.

man im on my laptop and that picture is huge but it looks like it came with a different gasket. there should be one on the filter already.

What brand filter is that?

It will only go in one spot, where it's centered on the filter. Can't really tell from the pic if it's in the right spot. It will make contact with the engine in the flat area where you will see it lines up. It shouldn't really move, and be slightly proud of the filter surface so it makes contact with the engine.

That being said, any filter I've ever seen had the ring stuck to the filter, never had to install it.

Have another look at the engine block....maybe the old one is still stuck onto the block and didn't come off with the filter, and that's why you don't see it on the filter?

That would be a metal crush-washer that is essentially squashed into place, not a rubber o-ring. They don't come with the filter, and the jury is out on whether or not they need replacing (that would be like a "what oil is best" post).

How big is the o-ring you speak of, as big as the one in bd43's post, or small like it would fit the plug?

The o-ring on the filter is huge (see BD's photo.. look where his finger is).

If the o-ring you are talking about is small, then look at your drain plug.

it fits perfectly fine without the O-ring. the old one i took off looks the exact same and doesnt have an O-ring on it. im installing it without this O-ring.

If it's steel (I'd call it a washer), it doesn't go on the filter.

haha wow it is now going on 2 hours since i started this.

and i am so eternally grateful for the help ive gotten here. now here is where it stands:

i was talking about a steel ring. i asked the guys at the dealership parts department for, "an oil filter and O-ring" and they gave me an "oil filter and O-ring" which was a boxed filter and a metal ring taped to the top of the box. i was trying to fit this supposed o-ring into the filter. it seemed retarded because it didnt seem like it would screw in.

well....of course it wouldnt. it was impeding the threads of the shaft from screwing into the filter.

so i discarded that assuming this "o-ring" was unnecessary. and NOW that the bike is now full of 4 litres of oil........i find out the o-ring was something entirely different.

wow.

i am going to go back to the dealer tomorrow and see if the filter they sold me comes with an o-ring or not. if it does then im not re-opening the filter.

i didnt apply a coat of oil to the o-ring (if there is even one there). is this something to be concerned about?

god damn. what a night. i wont even be able to get to the gym now. its already 930 i started this at like 730.

Tell me you didn't acutally put in 4 liters of oil? On page 6-13 of the owners manual, it should only take roughly 2.8L of oil.

god damn. guy working in the maintenance side of the dealer i went to told me to put in 4L as it will hold 4L. I could always drain a bit tho. should i?

now i just hope the filter i bought came with an O-ring....ill find out 2morrow.

Oh boy... that's not good. Did you really put 4 liters in it? You over filled it dude and need to go open up that drain plug again. It's pretty bad for your seals/gaskets if this is what you did.
