So its commonly known that the R6 and FZ6 have the same engine... no brainer... but putting the R6 and FZ6 up against eachother.. the only main difference i see is compression ratio. So what are we looking at in general speed differences? Will these hold neck and neck? FZ pull on the R? but the R win 1/4 overall? What would level the playing field.. would intake and exhaust set up help the FZ out?

Pretty much, whats it gonna take to make the FZ equal to or better than the R6 speed wise? and with that being said... where does the R6S come into play?

*Reason im askin, after a number of people asking if its the little brother of the R6 i want some nice solid evidence to prove its its evil twin or even big brother

From what I've observed so far, the FZ6 engine is actually closer to the R6S engine rather than the R6.

The fuel injection system is different, and has a bit lower compression when compared to the R6. The R6 has a higher spec intake system and the engine is tuned for more top end power.

The FZ6 is tuned for more low/ mid range power, and has a lower redline.
I'm not sure if it was the rider, or the bikes but I watched a FZ6 beat an R6 in the 1/4 mile drag race.
The FZ6 seems to have a lower gear ratio and more torque available earlier in the power band.

The R6 was catching the FZ6 at the 1/8 mile point, but the FZ6 held it off by about 2 bike lengths at the end of the race.

The R6S is just a newer R6 that's identical to the 2003-2004 R6.
The FZ6 engine is BASED off of the R6(2003-2004~), it is not the same engine. It is not the same engine with just a different head gasket. The cams are going to be different to allow different power delivery. The FZ6 was designed to have more midrange pull, while the R6 as a race bike was designed to have top end.
And as the R6 is a race oriented bike, it's suspension is far superior.
Performance wise, an R6 puts around 105-110HP to the ground, while the FZ6 puts out around 90(rwHP,stock). You can mod and tune an FZ6 to be as fast as a stock R6, but a modified R6, especially for race, has it beat.

If you pitted the two together with the SAME rider, the R6 would obviously be the winner, especially on the track.

Now I don't mean to say the FZ6 is a loser, it was designed for a very specific purpose, "The every bike", and it does that very well.

I wanted an FZ6 since the first time I read about it, but at the dealer there was a 2006 FZ6, and a 2006 R6S, and I sat on both, the FZ6 fit me perfectly, while I hated the ergonomics and feel of the R6. Not to say I wouldn't ride one, but I prefer the FZ.

In almost everything but a straight line its gonna be rider skill to determine the best imo.

R6:
2003 - 2004 Design < FZ6 Bike Engine is based off this
2005 < Better suspension among smaller things
2006 - 2008 < Major redesign done in 06, new bike pretty much
2009 < Slight redesign. Better ECU ect

The R6S is pretty much a redone 2003 - 2005, I have seen dyno sheets ranging on this bike from 95 to a bit over 100 stock HP stock. So the R6 (not R6S) has been through a major re design between the span of the year our bike is based on meaning of course the r6 will make more power.

The r6/r1 is Yamaha flagship bike so of course they will see the redesigns more.

To me, I don't care about comparisons between the FZ6 and the R6. The Fizzer is superior in long-distance comfort and everyday utility. The R6 is painful for anything really extended riding. The R6 is mainly an excellent track bike, period. The R6 is really sluggish at the low rpm and is no fun in typical city driving.

If you need more speed and still retain the ergo of the FZ6, go with the first generation FZ1.

My future brother-in-law has an R6s. The 2007 model I believe. I rode it once and I have to say I wasn't quite comfortable on it so I can't really compare too well. That and I was in dress shoes and his helmet. I much prefer the FZ's riding position. He rode with my dad and myself one day and would eat me up coming out of corners due to his more aggressive riding style. On the way back home I took advantage of him on a road I knew better and left him husslin to keep up. I have to admit I enjoyed that quite a lot. :D

:D Alright, I love posts like these!! Take in mind all facts are Canadian and written by me.

R6(2006 - 09) 09 Specs - 127 HP and 48 Torque at crank
The bike has had a totally different motor and everything. Superior brakes and suspension, and radical (and o so sexy) race styling. Nothing in common to our bike.

R6(1999 - 2005) and R6S (2006-09) 2009 Specs - 110 HP and 49 Torque at crank
The original R6. In 2002, received fuel injection. 2005 had a ECU change, and in 06 was kept around and given the S moniker. A race bike that is also pretty good on the street. Very close to our FZ's. We have more comfort and more low down power, they have better handling, more top end and clip ons. Same motor with different injectors and a throttle body change. Might be something else, Yamaha has never confirmed this with me. We have the better motor of the two for everything from twisties to in town due to more low down torque.

FZ6 (2004-09) 98HP and 46 Torque at Crank
Our babies. Awesome motor, and great everything else. I think we all know about them, so I won't write anything.

Ride Report!
Before I bought my FZ, i rode all three. My girl friend was the deciding factor as she goes everywhere as a passenger with me. The R6 is insane. A possible 125 rear wheel with a huge redline and little low down torque. City riding was painful as you need to constantly shift and keep her in the power. The R6s would have been my bike of choice except for comfort. Excellent power and handling and pretty good comfort. But still a bit too racy for every day usage and longer rides. The FZ does everything and everything well. It can handle with the R6, and is more streetable. In a drag, you won't be far behind at all, and a better rider on an FZ can take EITHER R6. I love my bike! :D

My best friend has the '05 R6 and while it is a bit faster than my '07 Fz6, it's not very comfy and has a more leaned forward riding position. It's a race bike, the Fz is more a sport-touring bike. The Fz has better low to midrange and is more stable in town due to the fact that you dont have to shift so much. Plus it doesn't kill your legs and backside on trips, as the seat is lots softer. The windscreen/fairing blocks more rain too. I guess I'm just biased...

the FZ is easier to launch in a drag race because its a bit heavier than an r6.
I belive the transmission ratios on all 3 bikes are the same.
The R6 06+ has larger bore and shorter stroke
2001-'05 65.5 mm x 44.5 mm
2006+ 67.0 mm x 42.5 mm
Titanium valves and variable length intake runners(08+).

Completely different bikes for completely different purposes. If you want to go around a track quickly, R6. If you want to go across the country comfortably, FZ6.

It's kinda like arguing what's the best car, Bentley Continental or Lamborghini Murcielago... both around £200,000... both have a 6 litre V12... both seat two people plus luggage... both will top out at close to 200mph and do 0-60 in less than five seconds.

But one is a long distance cruiser with supreme comfort, the other is a lunatic track weapon. Completely different design briefs. To claim they are in any way related based on the above bare facts is completely misguided.

Same as comparing the FZ6 and R6. Road bike versus track bike, albeit both are compromised to cover a little bit of each others territory, so you can ride an R6 on the road and you can hoon an FZ6 round a track. But neither is the bikes designed territory, hence their shortcomings when trying to use them for tasks they were not designed for.

Chalk and cheese.

Well put!! I enjoyed reading it!

My roomate has an '07 R6. Our bikes share the same garage, parked side by side everynight. Only difference is, my bike is taken out everyday as his bike sits for weeks.

Good point. The best bike is the one that gets used the most.

Wasn't this thread about how to make a FZ6 go as fast as a R6. Would be interesting to hear any ideas on how to mod a FZ6 into a nice track bike.

I'm buying my nr. 2 bike (yes, its a FZ6) for use on the track - but would also be interested in how to make it more "track"-able.

yeah, thats kinda my main thing, i like the 600cc class, but would just like to know what it would take for my bike to equal an R6... exhaust... juice box... but at the same time, an R6 with those same mods would still be faster correct?

in all honesty, i really just want to know what i can say in response to the "its the baby brother to the R6" as if the R6 is superior.
