Those statistics are completely fabricated. Not even in the realm of reality.

So far from reality that it is beyond wrong and onto intentional fabrication.

Just saying you know.

they used news and wiki.... hmmmm.........:spank: anyone cant put anything on wiki that they want. There can be absolutely no truth to it and it will stay on there until someone calls bs.....

Hi Kiera

The deal about women only earning 77cent to the dollar is not exactly true. It is presented alot as fact but it just doesnt work.

Women for the most part are the main ones that raise children, and make decisions based on this, and accept jobs with more flexibility and miss more hours, days, weeks, months, years of work. This effects thier pay, and advancement. Its a fact.

Male teachers get paid exactly the same on senority as female, doctors, lawyers, and so on.

Women work less hours per year on avg than men that is a fact. It adds up to a huge difference in pay, that can be presented as a unequal pay rate, but its not.

Please understand I am all for women. I am totally against sexism. I dont like it for or against anyone. Its not right in either direction.

While it may be true that women "choose" jobs that are more able to be worked with a family, I don't think it is really a matter of choice. As a student of psychology, sociology and now school counseling, I have done extensive research on how boys and girls are socialized differently. A while back, someone posted a thread about what boys can teach you, and I raised the question why can't girls teach you the same thing?

The fact is that our country (and I'd venture to guess the world) still sees men and women as very different, and needing different things. Boys are socialized (again, just generalizations) to be tough, not show emotion, be competitive, and not get too attached to people. Many girls are raised to be the peacemaker, not choose sides, be rational and practical, choose friends and family above all (and make sure those relationships are strong and thriving), not be competitive, and place her needs behind those of other people. Because of these differences, girls in school tend to have more close friendships and be well-socialized (in the sense that people generally like them), and they also don't go out for as many sports. Girls are still only half as likely as boys in high school to be involved in competitive sports. Boy sin school tend to have many more acquaintances, but not as many close friendships, they tend to hide their emotionality for fear of being sen as weak, and they also tend to lean toward more competitive realms, not just in sports, but also in academics (competing with friends for grades) or social lives (competing for girls).

In the adult world, these differences don't go away, but are rather enhanced. Men are competitive, striving for more money than their peers and trying to win that promotion. Women, having been socialized to believe that putting others' first is ideal, will take the jobs that are offered to them without much negotiation for pay, or demand for more responsibility. They are also told that relationships are more important than anything else, and so family and friends take a higher priority for women than men.

The thing to remember is that this is not entirely biological. Some things can not change. Women breastfeed, men can't. Women give birth, men can't. However, employers should not be able to justify a promotion to a man because a woman decided she wanted a family, when the man may have started one at the same time. Just because medically he did not need time off, does not give him the upper hand in the equation. That is like giving a woman a promotion because a male coworker was in a car accident and was incapacitated for six weeks and unable to work. There is a certain amount of understanding and human-ness that is missing in the world if this is a justifiable excuse for not advancing women.

Granted there are some things that need to be considered with the 77 cent thing. Upon further research into the matter, I did find out that that figure is overall, not per job, which I thought it was. However, why is it that women "choose" careers that pay less? What are these careers? Nurses make less than doctors. Nurses are more often female, doctors male. Nurses also tend to work more closely with patients, and don't require quite as much math and science. So, as far as the socialization piece goes, nursing fits with the traditional women-as-nurturers and bad at math role that girls are forced into by many parents. As far as legal matters, there have been studies done that show that many law careers (and business, for that matter) are advanced outside of the office, on the golf course most often. Women are typically not exposed to golf, as it has been a traditionally male endeavor, (golf actually stands for Gentlemen Only Ladies Forbidden) and is something many men are taught by their fathers. In the legal and business world, then, managers get to know promising young associates by hanging out on the golf course, sharing wisdom, and providing information that will eventually help that young person get a promotion. It is not a conscious thing, just something that many people don't consider when thinking about this subject.

Finally, as a pregnant woman myself, I know that my children will come first for me. However, I also know that I want them to come first for Rob too, and he had better make choices consistent with keeping family at the front of his mind. I also know that women are allowed maternity leave with pay (for 6 weeks, without for 12) under many companies' policies (though I believe the majority offer a reduced pay), however these same companies do not allow this for men. They allow the time of, per FMLA, but they do not allow any financial subsidy for it. This is a way that companies force men to choose family or career, and at a time when women can not make money due to the fact that they can not work because of medical reasons, men HAVE to take the reigns and provide financially, thus missing out on a wonderful experience of being home with a newborn.

So, as stated before, our country has come a long way, but it takes a really long time to change an ideology. Sexism is alive and well, it is just a lot harder to see now, because places and people do such a good job of hiding it and/or justifying it.

Sorry for the long post, everyone!

So how do you extinguish an ideology? We've tried being humanitarians and helping people, but we will never be looked upon favorably by these people. I'm not getting at you, but just asking a serious question. What course of action could be made to promote a better opinion of the great ole us of a?

Ah but the question is...why does America think they are in the position to "cure the world". As far as many countries are concerned America are the terrorists with the greatest number of invasions and failed wars in the past how many years?

I like american people, I like the shopping in your country, but I dont like the fact that many (if not all) Americans are brain washed into thinking their country is the "all mighty" and the defender's of the world against terrorism. As far as I'm concerned America has fueled the flame of terrorism through their actions...when I was growing up the only terrorists I knew of were the UVF (Ulster Volunteer Force) and IRA (Irish Republican Army) and with some recollection of Etta (In spain). Now we have AlQueda etc.....always in the same sentence as the USA.

Yeah so September 11th was terrible, not a nice thing to have happened to innocent people but the people that have been killed and murdered by American forces since then is a bloody disgrace and instead of clapping your soldiers on the back for a job well done, wake up and look at the death you have caused and the destruction you have brought onto a country thousands of miles from your own. In that light, September 11th is no longer such a grave occurance.

America wont win this war on terrorism...and that monkey of a president that led you into Afghanistan and Iraq should be held accountable for his so called "weapons of mass destruction".

America has alot to learn, you're still a young country with alot of wrinkles to iron out!

Remember one thing: It took Ireland 700 years to get out of the control of the English government, and its taken over 30 years to supress the IRA and UVF in their war...

why would any nation think that moving into a country and occupying it would be the answer to rid the whole world of terrorism. Even if you knock out their top leader you'll never stop them...there is always going to be a generation following with the same ideals.

IMO the war on terror has nothing to do with a fight for justice but everything to do with oil

hidden agenda

Unfortunaltly we think the muslim/Christian(the west) issue is exclusive to our generation.. look at the Crusades,Christianity 's got more skeletons than cupboards to hide them in...theres been extremists/fanatics since religion began..only the tools of their trade have changed

Alqueda attacked the twin towers with the express purpose of bringing about war with the US. That was the stated goal, to bring about war with the US and begin a holy war so that the last Caliph could return to earth.

Who is dropping white phosporus on schools?
Napalm was real big in WWII, we burned most of Japan and Germany to the ground in horrible fire storms.
In the Phillipines we executed almost every man woman and child over the age of 10.
We committed genocide on the American Indian. Incited a bogus war with Mexico, and took most of the west. Now does it matter that Spain incited a bogus war with the native people of mexico, took it over, removed all the wealth and interbreed with the surviors? Or that the native people had over run and killed the people that were there before?

The UK participated in the fire bombings of Germany, and helped with Japan as much as they could.
Addicted millions to opium in China to control the country, treated India horribly.

I understand all this. None of us are with out evil deeds presented as a good deed in our own history.

Here is one thing you will not find Americans doing. Hiding in schools and churches firing on people using children as human shields and propaganda when they are killed.

You wont find us hiding bombs in the streets blowing up random people, you wont find us walking into stores and blowing ourselves and random men women and children to bits.

We are able to respond. We have a military that is able to do jobs that other countries cant.

But the twin towers attack was the brain child of Osama bin laden from Afghanistan, not by Sadam Hussain...so why did you end up going to Iraq? What threat was posed on the USA by the people and terrorists in Iraq? Why did you neglect Afghanistan if that was the reason behind going to war? Why have you failed to find osama if you are indeed a powerful force when you can find a guy hiding in a hole underground?

The American Military is a mighty force but I do think you're making a massive mistake in terms of the money wasted on fighting a war that will never be won (yet another lost war to add to your medal cabinet) You can bet your ass that the Russians, North Koreans, Iranians are laughing right now. As you waste your money, resources and lives they are sitting back getting stronger. Not that I mind, the Russian army is alot bigger and stronger then the US army and they're pretty darn good people so your only threat really would be from those other countries that dont like America.

You mentioned that you dont use children as shields, I applaud you for that...but...you still kill them accidently in your attacks...so whats the difference?

Need I remind you that you also are the only country to drop an atomic bomb, 2 bombs at that!! O and you messed up Vietnam for years to come...I have good friends from vietnam and when I was there there were so many children with disfiguring conditions...so you are talking about using children as human shields when you have destroyed the lives of children from the 1970's right to this day with the countless conditions that they still suffer from...

No country is without sin, but you guys really should learn from your mistakes and take a back seat and not try to police the world...your not the only power in the world...but I guess with a country so young you're bound to have teething problems. You're going through your teenage years I guess!

Not very long ago there existed another terrorist group. They bombed civilian areas, killing women and children. They destroyed a city centre with their bombs. They controlled the local population, maiming and killing those who didn't agree with their ideals. Their stated aim was to kill, maim and murder the english population until their aims were met. At a funeral for one of their 'soldiers' they came across two british squaddies - they pulled the squaddies out of their car and the mob punched, kicked and stabbed them until they were dead. Thousands of people died on both sides. The international community didn't give a toss. They were called the IRA and they now sit in our parliament.

Just thought I'd put this in whilst we are all having a ding dong about the terrorists, taleban/al qeada etc.

Threads like this one keep reminding me that

Violence in any kind is a sign of failure!

I recognize the need to go to war in some cases, but I also notice a lack of interest in how we got to that point in the first place .......
In my opinion, the fact that we are now engaged in Afghanistan and Irak, is a perfectly clear example of the western world failing big time.
We should by now have been in enough wars to see them coming, - and be able to see alternate solutions before its to late.
But it seems that we will always stand by until it's to late, and then blame our opponents for the hole thing!

This is one of the major differences in Western and Asian culture; In the west we place blame, in Asia they place responsibility ...

So in my honest opinion we should start to take the responsibility, that came with our fortunate development in the west seriosly, and stop using war-hammers on everybody that don't agree with us.

Last I just wonna make it clear that im NOT bashing the soldiers in the conflicts!!! They are brave men that deserve all our support!!

I'm bashing the politicians that again and again fail to open their eyes and see whats comming before it's to late!

Amen. Scorphonic, just so you know, not ALL of us Americans fell for Dubya's idiocy. Some of us didn't buy into the fearmongering. And some, like myself, believe the new administration should investigate the Bush Administration and prosecute them for the lies they told the American people while leading us into a war that had NOTHING to do with September 11th.

Alas, that last part won't happen because we seem to be on a bipartisan kick these days (not that it's a bad thing), and nobody wants to ruin that after the last 8 years of partisan politics. People now seem to be looking at the future with a feeling of hope, that we can somehow reverse all the crap that the Bush Administration led us into.

I'm extremely proud of our country for choosing a different direction in our leadership. From the feedback we're getting and reactions we're seeing, the world feels the same way. I'm hopeful our new President can restore the faith of the world in America, that we can once again become a measured, thoughtful country, willing to help anyone, anywhere, at anytime.

+1 Many Americans are under the impression that the whole reason we are at war with Iraq is because George W Bush decided he needed to finish his daddy's unfinished business, which was a war for oil. Whether that is the case or not, it is the only reason that one can think of as to why we needed to declare war int he first place.

While some cultures have opinions that I may personally not agree with, or be in conflict with themselves, I personally do not feel that it is our place to do anything about that, and I vote for politicians according to my beliefs. Many do not know enough about their candidates to make a choice based on their own beliefs and values, and so they just vote for whoever they hear about the most.

Please, please, please, don't hate all Americans for the shallow views and egocentric politicians that represent us....

So nice to hear someone from the US opposing the way things are run!!!
This is really what confirms that democracy is still alive in the US. From time to time I get the impression that "the normal man" in the US have simply given up, and is now just flowing with the stream....
But statements like this confirms that it is not so, - Thank you.
