FZ6 Fuel Economy

I have been considering the purchase of an FZ6 this spring, but a little concerned about fuel economy. The Yamaha website list the FZ6 at 40 MPG according to EPA test. That does not sound too good to me for a 600 cc bike. I was wondering what it does in the real world. I would appreciate it very much if some of you could tell me what fuel economy you get (max, min, average, MPG). Please state if using U.S. gallons or Imperial gallons.

If the fuel economy is you main concern......the FZ6 isn't for you. If you want a very capable all arounder that is as good as or better than every 600 in every aspect then the FZ6 is for you. A motorcycle isn't a means to get good MPG it is therapy for the soul. If you want good MPG get a moped. And I dont mean to sound like an a$$.


BTW I get (us gallons) max 48 min 32. It all depends on how you ride it.

Also I think you may be mistaken on the EPA test. The EPA doesn't test motorcycles (unless this is a new thing for '09) the manufacturer gets to throw out a number they like.

40 is right on the money for me. My best average (back in Spetember) was 42mpg (engine still breaking in at the time). Now in the dead of winter I see about 37-39 mpg. This is mostly commuting to work and other places in the city with little chance of bike warmimg up completely.

On average I do like 320 - 350 km on a tank (15 Liters).
This would add up to 21 - 23 Km per Liter.


15 Liters = 3.96 US Gallons
320 Km = 198 Miles

So it would be approximately 50 miles per gallon.

I don`t know but it goes hell of a long way on a tank of fuel which is all that matters to me.

40 mgp average seems about right. I know it sure fire beats my SUV I drive. I know my wallet and checkbook appreciates how infrequently and for how little it costs to fill 'er up. i know how much joy i get in emptying that fuel tank.

+1 It all depends how you flip your wrist. I can milk better that 50 mpg out of my '05. and i can get it down to the low 30s if i'm really beating it in the twisties. All depends what you want. and:welcome:

The guy I bought it from told me he got 60mpg on it. That is probably possible if you switch to 6th gear right away and cruise below 70mph at all times. I get around 40 and don't ride to consertively. Welcome to the forums!

I should mention that when I do get 38mpg, that is when I am running around 7-8k+ rpm riding on the back roads with my friends for 2-3 hours straight

If I take it really easy i get around 50 but i took a friend of mine for a ride and I got about 32 when i filled up next. We were riding really hard the entire time.

I have 4500ish miles on my bike, never done worse than 41, average around 46+ and I've gotten 50 when no hurry.

As previously mentioned, your fuel economy will depend greatly on how you ride the bike. Also, your weight will influence fuel mileage, as well as any engine modifications you've done.

When first breaking in my engine, I was disappointed to see economy as low as 32 mpg. As the parts began to "wear in" the mileage increased into the mid 40's. Right now I'm averaging 46-48 mpg on Yamalube dino oil. That should increase slightly when I start running Amsoil synthetic this Spring.

I average 40-45 with riding in the canyons pretty hard. On road trips I get 50+mpg...and that's riding at an "indicated" speed of 85mph smoothly

oh, and my last two person road trip saw 51mpg with me, my girlfriend and our clothes all loaded. Although we cruised 65-75mph the whole time.

I would say 40mpg is at the lower end of "normal" riding. If you like to kiss the redline a lot, expect lower. On longer trips it will flirt with 50 mpg. Pretty respectable for a bike with close to 100 hp, as most 600cc bikes get much worse.

I'm usually at 42-48 mpg during commuting, and 48-53 on the open road. Playing on the backroads I have gotten as bad as 31. Your right wrist can be linked to your wallet.

Speaking as a big guy... I'm niether shocked or upset about my mileage per fill. I'm all torso so I'm basically like draggin a sail behind the bike. 290lbs... 6'3'' ... Highest ever was during break in at around 53 (while drafting semi's on the highway), and the worst was trying to stay with a seasoned track guy (lil asian dude who's super cool about giving riding tips) through the twisties and got 30ish... the key is have fun when you want to have fun. If you want mpg then shift low and accel slow... BORING!!!

It's probably approaching dead horse range with all of us saying mid 40's to 50 for mpg. I just wanted to say I love the fact that I don't have to behave ALL the time riding my FZ in order to get 40+ mpg. I can still wring its neck everytime I get on the interstate and break 100 mph daily and still get 42 mpg

The best I've ever gotten was 52 mpg on my trip to Deal's Gap.

With the mods I have now, I still get a good MPG. I ride mostly 7-9K and I average min 38-44MPG. This really does not matter to me to much. Its the
FZ6 that matters to me. This is the best all around rounded bike, that will do the twisties like any other 600CC sportbike, can keep up up to 750CC sportbike, can be taken for miles and hours at a time and will not hurt your back at all.
I have researched bikes for about two years and am so glad I've chossen FZ6 as my first bike. Would not trade it in for any other bike if you ask me. If I ever upgrade a bike it will be FZ1 or R1.

When I passed my test middle of last year I consistently got 60 mpg (english gallons, 53mpg in american money). That was taking it gently getting used to the bike and getting some safe miles under my belt.

By the end of the year after riding with some more experienced riders (and spanking it a bit) I dropped to 45-50 mpg (40-45 mpg american).

It's a trade off between miles per gallon and smiles per gallon :rockon:
