I regularly use 93 octane fuel in my 08 FZ6. Across the border into New Jersey they sell 108 octane fuel for people wishing to add a little extra punch to their whips.

Would 108 octane fuel increase performance? Or would the negative effects (if there are any) outweigh the positive effects?

It may work as long as you dont fill up everytime. The higher octane could/would burn up the valve seals, o-rings,etc.. Or go buy a octane booster at a parts house (advance auto, orielly's )..

It will DECREASE the performance of the bike as the bike is not designed to run on it. You'll get the most, pardon the pun, bang for your buck with 87 octane. The timing with 108 will be way off, and you'll be wasting gross amounts of money running it.

Actually an engine runs it's best with the lowest octane rating it will burn,
without preignition or detonation.
I think the 93 Octane has better storage qualities however.
FZ6 will run on 87 Octane well.

Octane boosters contain a lot of alcohol in one form or another, you see the snap result from that, not from whatever magic ingredient they claim to add to the bottle. Its a gimmick, and a waste of money.

Bingo!!! O4fizzer hit the nail right on the head. Octane is a measurement of it's resistance to pre-ignition/ detonation. The FZ6 engine is designed to run on 87 octane fuel. 108 octane fuel will produce LESS horsepower in the FZ6 engine when compared to 87 octane fuel. The only way to take full advantage of 108 octane fuel would be an increase in compression, and totally re-mapping the fuel injection system.

I know there have been lengthy discussions about this and many specific reasons that people believe this is not true. But when I put premium (93) in my FZ that thing takes off like a bat out of hell compared to regular. maybe it has something to do with the 10% ethanol in this part of the country but I notice a significant difference in how fast the engine rev's and the power the bike has.

Now at the same time do I think it's worth paying the extra 30-50c a gallon every time i fill up? Not so much. But every once in a while it's kinda fun to put it in. I also seem to get better mileage with it too. So until I see some kind of dyno chart or real numbers I say: if you feel like you get more power out of it, do it. You're not going to hurt the thing by putting high test in there, anymore than if you put rotella oil in your engine and not yamalube.

well i find that my fz6 runs better with 98 RON ulp than the standard 91 ron that the biek will run on

and that was when the bike wa stock

notice it more now than ever before
also alot of gusy with ford v8's have found a noticebile difference in the switch from the standard 91RON ulp to the 98RON PULP

but i do agree that for the best advantages the bike's ign timing needs to be adjusted and a knock sensor installed this should give a few more hp :)

Does anyone know if the FZ has a knock sensor? If it does, there could be some benefit to higher octane fuel. You will reach a point of diminishing return. When the ECU reaches the limits of the map, additional octane is wasted $$. Higher octane does not always equate to higher performance.

It does not.

I wouldnt run a higher octane in mine. It has already been said but our engines are not designed for it so it would be throwing away money. I have heard of people running high octane in it if the bike has sat for awhile but i still think it doesnt do any good.

Octane is not a measure of the amount of power in the fuel, but rather it's resistance to detonation. Wikipedia says it best:

The only way to take advantage of the higher octane is through a motor designed to take advantage of it, that is, higher compression.

For me, I've tried it a few times and noticed no difference in performance.

one brand in my area uses ethanol in thier fuel and i have used it occasionaly. i wouldnt say there was any performace increase, but if i remember, i got slightly better economy.

i only ever use 87 octane myself, but one thing that has yet to be mentioned. the only possible benefit i see in using 'premium' is that most fuel companies use better/more cleaning additives in thier high octane fuel.

I stand corrected, turned out to be 103 octane that the gas station sells. I was told 105 octane would blow your engine.

I use 93 octane on my bike as it burns cleaner and is simply a higher quality of gasoline. 87 octane gasoline is a gamble because many gas stations will use the cheapest gas to earn your business. At the cost of sacrificing their good quality gasoline to get the business of the average clueless motorist, this effects you in that companies like WaWa, Sheetz, Sunuco, Exxon Mobile, and many more - are notorious for selling terrible quality gas.

This "crappy" gas causes excess gunk buildup which in turn puts extra strain on your motor, ultimately decreasing your power, performance, and overall life of your motor.

My close 4 friends and I all use 93 octane from Shell gas stations (as they sell 0% ethenol) in our performance vehicles, and use 87 octane in our beater cars.

I only use 87 in my ford explorer, and i never use WaWa gas unless its last resort.

By what the facts say you should experience lower fuel economy and lower perfomance with the 10% ethanol.

But most major companies do put more detergents etc. in their high test gas and that is why I will run high test every couple of tanks.

Awesome..............everyone told me i was crazy to use wikipedia because all its articles are edited by whoever wants to take the time to type it and nothing can be trusted on that website.......who has the last laugh now?!!!

Not sure where i was going with that........sweet! a few more casino credits for posting.
